A pair of goals in the final two minutes of play weren’t enough for Team A in the Whitehorse Men’s Soccer League’s championship game.
The determined squad just fell short in their game against Team C on Friday at F.H. Collins Secondary School, losing the game by a close score of 4-3.

Team C went in ranked as the number two squad and had lost its two previous contests to Team A in league play.
“It’s good to win,“ said Team C goaltender George Marados. “We are probably one of the older teams, so it’s nice that we were able to still come out on top.“
It was an uphill battle from the beginning for Team A, which had only eight players for the majority of the contest.

Despite the mismatch on paper, the group battled hard and were able to overcome their lack of numbers by taking advantage of key opportunities throughout the second quarter.
After a scoreless and evenly played first half, Team C got on the board early on in the second half. The goal was put in two minutes into the second half after a nice pass was made to an open player, who just lifted the ball out of the reach of Team A’s netminder.
Team A answered back around the 30 minute mark of the half, when Boris Hoefs gained possession of the ball after it took a funny bounce off of a Team C defender.

With a clear path to the net, Hoefs made no mistake, burying the ball into the net on a hard, low shot.
Continued pressure by Team C paid off and they scored three more goals, which resulted in the score being 4-1.

Team A may have been down, but they were far from out. The group chipped away, scoring on a penalty kick and then adding one more goal with less than a minute to go in the contest. This would be as close as they would get though and the game ended 4-3.
Brendon Preston finished with three goals and on assist for Team C. Besides Hoefs, scorers on Team A included Charles Mann and Matt Thomson.

Ammon Hoefs played for Team A. He said he was pleased with how the group performed.
“For me I had a lot of fun this season,“ he said. “It’s a great group of guys, everyone is always positive, works hard, plays their hearts out and the final game, eight players versus 15, to be 4-3 I can’t be upset with that. I am actually really impressed with that because everyone played right to the bitter end.“
