Sixty teams take part in soccer tournament

Indoor soccer players had the opportunity to showcase their skills this weekend at the Northwestel Indoor Soccer championships.

The event began on Friday and concluded with the finals on Sunday, which were held exclusively at the Canada Games Centre.

“(The championships) just brings all of the soccer players together once a year and it gives the folks from the communities an opportunity to play against Whitehorse (teams),” said Brian Gillen, president of the Yukon Soccer Association.

“Whitehorse players play against different teams and it just strengthens the whole soccer spirit.”

This was the 19th annual Northwestel Indoor Soccer championship.

It was open to any teams in a minor soccer program in the Yukon communities.

Teams played between four and six games and were competing for first, second and third place medals.

The winning team in each division was also awarded a trophy.

Altogether there was 47 teams from Whitehorse, while 13 teams competed from other communities including Atlin, Mayo, Dawson and Haines Junction.

A total of 127 games were played in all of the divisions.

In a thrilling final in the U-7 Division Vector Research defeated Dawson City Lions 5-3, while in the bronze medal game Lake Laberge Lions who defeated Klondike Copier, who won the game in a shootout. 

Titan Gaming won against Underhill Geomatics by a score of 6-1 in the U-9 Division in the gold medal game, while Murraya Dental defeated Northern Denture 2-1to finish third.

In the U-11 Division, Assante Financial defeating Henry Gulch Exploration 12-5. In the bronze medal game, Sportlife defeated the Deli 2-1.

Woodhouse Consulting won the U-13 gold medal game by defeating Qualita Cleaners in a close final game, winning 6-4.

In the U-15 final, Electrical Shop defeated Wintemute Electrical 7-4.

Mayo repeated as U-18 champions when they defeated Dave’s Cleaning Service 8-4.
