Old man winter’s short lived foray into the Whitehorse valley earlier this week was a reminder to all runners and walkers that the outdoor racing season is all but over.
The last of the weekly Intersport 5km fun runs and walks was held Tuesday night.
There were 12 eager runners and walkers surprised by the unusually warm conditions.
First place finisher Scott Westberg (21:28), like gold medalist Usain Bolt in the men’s 100 m race at last summer’s Beijing Olympics, ran just fast enough to finish ahead of the lead pack.
Westberg cruised through the 5 km course at a comfortable pace dragging along with him Tom Ullyett (21:29), Don White (21:30) and Sue Bogle (21:33). The most notable run of the evening was posted by Dan Macdonald who finished fifth and ran a personal best for the season (23:10).
A couple of minutes behind Macdonald was Nicole Hulstein capping a banner running season with a time in the 25 minute range.
Desperate to match his wife’s time was Roger Hulstein.
Spousal marathoners Ginny and Grant Macdonald finished in the 27 minute range.
The Macdonalds were followed by Megan Phillips who took a detour and finished around the 30 minute mark.
The lone walker was Tanya Astika who raced through the three km course. To her surprise, within metres of the finish line she was overtaken by Westerberg and his entourage who sounded like a big gust of wind as they sprinted past her.
