A highlight reel goal just over three minutes into overtime and a brilliant goaltending performance by Edgewater Hotel’s goalie was all the team needed to advance to tonight’s Oldtimers Hockey League final.
Edgewater handed the Klondike Dental Molars their second loss of the playoffs, eliminating the team from this year’s competition by a score of 3-2.
“Every game has been tough,” said Edgewater forward Tony Clennett. “This game seemed like a really hard fought game.”
Edgewater has been the Cinderella team of the 2008 playoffs in the Oldtimers Hockey League. The team was in last place for the entire season in the league before a win in the final game moved them into seventh in the overall standings.
Since then, Edgewater has had an amazing turnaround so far in the playoffs, winning their first two games against the Performance Centre Turbos and Kilrich.
Their only loss came in the third game against the currently undefeated Yukon Inn, who has also qualified to play in the final.
Edgewater is still facing elimination because of the one loss and must beat Yukon Inn twice to win the 2008 championship.
Edgewater played a great team game against the Dental Molars, scoring the first goal at 16:12 of the opening period.
Clement notched the goal on the first power play opportunity of the game for Edgewater.
The Dental Molars weren’t fazed by the one-goal deficit and notched one of their own less than five minutes later.
Lorne Burnett netted the goal on a nice pass setup by Jim Baker, which gave him all the time in world in front of the Edgewater goal.
Edgewater goalie, Evan Grant got a piece of the puck, but it still managed to trickle over the line to tie the game up at one.
Edgewater retook the lead once again in the final three minutes of the period on a goal scored by Dave Milne.
The team got into penalty trouble at the end of the first frame, but Grant stood his ground and helped Edgewater preserve their one-goal lead.
Klondyke’s Shelby Workman scored the only goal of the second period with 5:07 left in the game.
In overtime, after both teams were penalized, Clennett notched his second goal of the game to give Edgewater the victory.
Clennett managed to get around the Dental Molar defenseman to break in all alone to beat Klondyke’s goalie with a back hand shot to win the game.
