POWERING THROUGH - A player on the AON Flames fights to get a shot off against Performance Centre Turbos goaltender Jeff Kalles during their game in the Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League on Thursday.
A 1-0 deficit in the early going of Thursday’s Oldtimers hockey game didn’t phase the AON Flames a bit.
The squad battled back to score five unanswered goals and went on to beat Performance Centre Turbos by a 6-2 score.
With the victory AON maintained its undefeated record in the Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League, which is presently at 1-0-1.
“It was a great game,“ said Flames netminder Barry Price. “I have a very good defensive core in front of me. We are going to be a force to reckon with this team.“
Bob Candow got Performance Centre Turbos off on the right track, scoring on a rush to give his team the 1-0 advantage. Jason Cunning received the lone assist on the goal.
Not even five minutes latter though, Dave Milne put AON back into the contest. Milne beat Performance Centre Turbos goalie Jeff Kalles on a quick snap shot after Tony Clennett made a nice centreing pass from behind the net.
The Flames kept the pressure on and it wasn’t long afterward that the team increased its lead by two goals. Blaine Demchuk scored his first of three goals on a quick shot that was set up by Charles Broadhagen. The first period ended with the Flames having the 3-1 advantage.
AON got off to a quick start in the final frame, netting a goal at just under the 21-minute mark. It was Demchuk’s second of the contest and assisted by Broadhagen and Scott Lowery.
Despite being down by three tallies, the players on Performance Centre Turbos still had plenty of fight let in them and created more than a few scoring chances in the Flames end.
Unfortunately for the Turbos, Prince brought his A game and was more than up to the task, making a number of great saves when called upon.
AON added one more goal to put the game out of reach, which was scored by Broadhagen.
Grant Lions finally solved Prince on a high shot with less than five minutes to go, but his would be as close as the Turbos would get.
Demchuk netted AON’s final goal at 2:24 remaining on the clock.
