Mountain View Golf Club's director of golf has qualified for the 2013 Canadian Club Pro Championships.
Jeff Wiggins finished third out of 48 players in the PGA of B.C. Club Pro Championship last week at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, earning him an automatic qualification into the tournament.
The championship will be held at the PGA Golf Club Ryder Course in Port St. Lucie, Florida from Nov. 17 to 20. This will mark Wiggins's third straight appearance at the event.
"I would expect a top 10,” Wiggins said confidently. "I like the Ryder Course. It sets up really well for my game. Last year, I had a broken driver that kind of set me back. This year, I'm going to take two drivers with me.”
Last year, Wiggins finished 62nd out of 93 pros after his driver broke in transit. In 2011, he finished tied for 20th after shooting even par, which got him an automatic invite back in 2012.
Wiggins will head to Phoenix at the beginning of next month to train for two weeks in Arizona prior to the championships.
"This one's a big one,” he told the Star. "I'm going down there to try and make some noise at that event. I'm looking forward to getting back there and placing well.”
In Vancouver last week, Wiggins shot a 72 and 74 to finish just three strokes back of tournament winner Scott Rodgers.
"It's open to all the top club professionals in our zone – B.C. and Yukon,” Wiggins explained of the tournament.
He battled through wet, windy conditions to the third-place finish, playing clean golf all throughout.
He recorded three birdies, two bogeys in the first round, and followed that up with two bogeys and a birdie in his second round.
"It was nice to be in the mix,” he said. "I was clubhouse leader for a while after the first round.”
Wiggins said playing defensively on the front-nine during the second round may have cost him.
"I played a little bit too defensive, and when I got through nine, I was a couple over,” he explained. "I thought it was time to get a little bit aggressive. The back nine was eight pars, one birdie, and a bunch of the pars should've been birdies.
"There was lots of drama, and it could have gone either way.”
On Saturday, Wiggins competed at a pro-am tournament at the Rise Golf Club in Vernon, B.C.
His foursome battled tough weather conditions to finish 10th out of 17 teams in the event. Wiggins competed alongside Yukoners Landon Kulych, Terry DeForrest and his longtime friend from Vernon, Alex Reed.
"The weather was horrible,” Wiggins admitted. "We had about 35-km per hour winds, it was about four degrees and then we had spitting rain all day that was like icicles hitting your skin. It was fun.”
The format was a two-player, net-ball which saw the top two players' scores from each hole tallied into the final score.
The group eventually won four rounds of golf at Rivershore Estates and Golf Links in Kamloops.
