Road cyclists taking part in the Tour de Skagway’s notorious hill climb had more than the vertical challenge to overcome.

Cold and rain soaked the riders in the about 2 C gloomy weather last Sunday as they competed in the final stage of the three-stage tour.

Only six riders competed in the 19-kilometer challenge, which climbs around one kilometre of elevation in the White Pass on the Klondike Highway.

David Jackson, who continues to set benchmarks for himself this season, raised the bar again on his hill climb, stopping the clock at one hour, 16 minutes and six seconds.

Rod Savoie was a close second in the expert men’s division, pulling in five seconds later.

Mollie Fraser and Ava Irving-Staley, the only two youth competing in the full climb did admirably. Fraser didn’t stop on her way to the summit and Irving-Staley “stayed with it, although it was a tough climb in rainy, cold conditions,” said event organizer Trena Irving.

The hill climb was a gritty capstone on a weekend that also included a time trial and a road race.

In all, 12 riders participated in the Tour de Skagway, down from last year’s participants.

Overall winners had to compete in all three events, which not many did.

In the U13 boys division, Johna Irving-Staley was first. While in the U15 girls, Fraser took the top spot.

Irving took the title in the adult women’s division and Jackson took the title in the expert men’s division.

Racers will be back at it this weekend for the Tour de Whitehorse, which is also the Yukon Championships.

Stage 1, the Yukon Energy Criterium/ Yukon Crit Championships takes place at 7 p.m. Friday on Titanium Way.

Stage 2, the Yukon Energy Time Trial/ Yukon Time Trial Championships starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at Takhini Gas on the Klondike Highway.

Stage 3, the Yukon Energy Road Race/ Yukon Road Race Championships takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday and runs from Jakes Corner to the Miles Canyon turn-off.
