The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club held their Spring Nordic Festival at Mount Mac Sunday in very warm temperatures.

According to Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club manager Ben Poudou, the festival is intended to celebrate spring and nordic sports.

There was a snowshoe tour, as well as fat biking, kicksledding, and curling.

Food, a beer garden and music were all part of the day’s entertainment.

Nineteen teams took part in a relay that involved fat biking, kick-sledding, shooting with laser rifles, and finishing off with skiing.

Teams 6, 8 11 and 15 made it into the relay final.

Team 11 won the final, with Hudson Lucier skiing across the finish line first.

Al Lucier said, “It was tough competition out there. Everybody worked hard in the corners and we came out well. Everybody pulled it together. I think it was a pretty good effort by everybody.”

Jan Downing and Stephen Horton were the other members of the team.

Hudson Lucier said it was a good race.

“The snow was holding up, even though it was super-warm, and that’s awesome, because it’s not easy to get snow to hold together at 10 degrees (Celsius). It was great. And the club did a great job putting it on. Great event.”

Al added, “It’s great to bring out the community. It’s great to see people who are new to the sport, old to the sport, just coming out and enjoying a great day in the sunshine. It’s fabulous to be a part of the community.”

The event finished off with a soap box race, featuring many creative sleds sliding down a hill in the stadium.
