Morphet posts quickest marathon time in Arctic Ultra
Local runner Brendan Morphet pushed Sunday to a win in the marathon category of the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra.

Local runner Brendan Morphet pushed Sunday to a win in the marathon category of the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra.
Morphet was the first to arrive at the Rivendall Farm in a time of three hours and 43 minutes. Morphet finished three minutes ahead of second-place Kevin Embacher and five minutes ahead of third-place Corey Nislow.
Kristen Daniel finished fourth in a time of 4:03 and Niall Fink was fifth in a time of 4:16.
Twenty seven of the 28 racing the marathon were on foot, the other racing on a mountain bike.
Yukoner Denise McHale set the record for the foot race in 2011, posting a time of three hours and 14 minutes. The same year, Friedrich Gantioler of Austria set the record for cross-country skiing with a time of 3:18 and Joel Hegner of Switzerland set the mountain bike record last year, posting a time of 3:19.
All 89 participants for the marathon, 100-mile to Braeburn, the 300-mile to Pelly Crossing and the 430-mile to Dawson City started enmasse Sunday morning at Shipyards Park.
Two others will start at Pelly Crossing for the first 200-mile race to Dawson City.
U.S. participant Thomas Zimmerman led the eight 100-milers to Rivendell, arriving at 5:26 p.m., just under seven hours after leaving the start at 10:30 a.m. Zimmerman was also the first to leave Rivendell, departing at 18:42 after one hour and 16 minutes of rest.
Brady Kyle was the second 100-miler out of Rivendell, leaving 27 minutes behind Zimmerman, after an hour and 19 minutes of rest. All eight are on foot.
Three-hundred mile competitors Borja Fernandez and Steve Hayes both arrived at Rivendell at 4:29, leading the 11 other participants. All are on foot, and three have scratched. Hayes was first to leave, departing at 5:02, followed eight minutes later by Fernandez.
Racing on a mountainbike, Bernard Hasenbalg led the 40 participants in 430-mile category into Rivendell, after a blistering three hours and 15 minutes on the trail.
Clark was also the first to leave, departing after 26 minutes of rest. There are four mountainbikers in the 430-mile category and one cross-country skier – the rest on foot.
