A women’s hockey team channelled their inner Wayne Gretzky en route to a tournament win Saturday.

Bitches Be Gretzky – one of four teams participating in the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association (WWHA) Jamboree – beat Toews and Confused 2-1 in a hotly contested final at Takhini Arena Saturday night.

Megan Seiling scored the winner on a late-game breakaway, while goalie Stacey Bowden kept Toews and Confused to just a single goal in the final.

Kylie Bird had the first goal for Bitches Be Gretzky, finishing off a slick pass from Jessica Nadeau.

Coralie Ullyett replied in the loss. A potential second goal by Ullyett was waved off by the referee.

“I managed to beat the defence to the puck and went in on a breakaway,” Seiling said of her top-shelf snipe. “Straight forehand, no deke.

“We kept up high spirits,” she added. “It’s so much fun. Everyone was a bit tired by the end, but there was a lot of people in the stands so that kept our adrenaline up. We worked really hard and put on a lot of pressure.”

Toews and Confused went undefeated en route to the final game.

Moves Like Jagr finished third in team standings, followed by Booby Orr. Each of the four teams played five games in a 24-hour span.

Other members of the Bitches be Gretzky team included: Crystal Beaudry, Kim Chapman, Jill Cunningham, Susan Hamilton, Laura Johnston, Selena Kaytor, Jen King, Amy Smith, Georgie Townrow and Jess Wood.

The seventh annual jamboree event was hosted by the WWHA to allow non-league players to enjoy a weekend jammed full of hockey.

“It’s a great chance to see people from a different perspective and make new friends,” said Toews and Confused player Liz Eddy. “And it brings out people that don’t necessarily get to play in the league.”

Notably, a group of women from Dease Lake, B.C., made the trip North for the event.

Meanwhile, in regular league play, Hvachtech Systems Blue remains in first place with an 11-2-1 record.

Hvachtech sniper Katie Vanderstelt continues to lead the league in scoring with 16 goals and eight assists in 12 games.
