Jean Mary Kapala

May 5, 1949 – December 22, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of our dear sister, Jean Mary Kapala, on December 22, 2023, in Whitehorse, Yukon, at the age of 74, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Daughter of the late Daniel and Helen Kapala, Jean is predeceased by her husband Dr. Bruce Beaton, who died suddenly on September 27, 2023.

Jean is survived by her five siblings Ethel (Ron, deceased) Armstrong, Bob (Ann, deceased) Kapala, Elaine (Tim, deceased), (Dan Lee, deceased) Robb, Linda Kilgour (Bill) Kilgour, Faye (Daryl) Lennan, as well as nieces and nephews.

Jean and Bruce were married for 45 years and long-time residents of the Marsh Lake community and Whitehorse. They wholeheartedly embraced the Yukon and everything it had to offer. They had an adventurous life of canoeing, kayaking, flying, fishing, sailing, enjoying bluegrass music festivals, and travelling, often on their motorcycles.

Jean had a long career as a Registered Nurse at Whitehorse General Hospital, with community nursing and as an educator at Yukon College.

No one loved life at Marsh Lake more than Jean. She adored and was very knowledgeable about the wildflowers and foliage. She trimmed and planted trees, fed the birds, walked her feline friends, and enjoyed the abundant wildlife. Jean’s down to earth nature, honesty, and deep concern for others will not be forgotten.

Jean spent her final weeks at Wind River Hospice House, in the attentive care of her beloved, dedicated friends and caring hospice staff. She was humbled by the love, support, and kindness she received from her Yukon family. Our family appreciates each and every one of you.

We celebrate our dear Jean’s journey to her Bruce (Buck).
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Please consider donations to Wind River Hospice House or Humane Society Yukon.

A wonderful member of the Class of ‘71 Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario. Jean you obviously had a full, happy life in the North. You will be sorely missed at our next class reunion!!! Rest In Peace!
