Premier, NDP trade blows over fracking

Premier Darrell Pasloski is accusing the NDP and Liberals of trying to stifle the territory’s oil and gas industry even before a final determination on fracking has been made.

By Chuck Tobin on January 22, 2015

Premier Darrell Pasloski is accusing the NDP and Liberals of trying to stifle the territory’s oil and gas industry even before a final determination on fracking has been made.

Both opposition parties have stated their outright opposition to hydraulic fracturing, Pasloski points out in a press release issued Wednesday.

The premier said the Yukon Party will take the time to thoroughly assess Monday’s report to the legislature on hydraulic fracking before taking a position.

“(Liberal Leader) Sandy Silver and the NDP are once again siding together to stifle yet another industry in Yukon,” Pasloski said.

He pointed out NDP MLAs were front and centre at anti-fracking demonstrations while the all-party Select Committee Regarding the Risks and Benefits of Hydraulic Fracturing was still doing its work.

“As for Sandy Silver, as usual, he changes his tune depending on who he thinks is listening,” Pasloski said in his release.

The all-party fracking committee – three Yukon Party members, two NDP and Silver – were unable to agree on two fundamental questions: whether fracking should be allowed in the Yukon, and whether it can be done safely.

The committee did make 21 recommendations largely aimed at gathering additional information to learn more about the benefits and risks of hydraulic fracturing.

Since the report was delivered Monday, the NDP committee members and lone Liberal have said there are just too many unknowns to permit fracking at this time.

It’s also abundantly clear the vast majority of Yukoners don’t want to see it here, they argue.

Division on the fundamental questions was along party lines, NDP committee members indicated this week.

Pasloski is also accusing the NDP of twisting the facts around an anti-fracking petition to the legislature last November.

The press release notes a preliminary review by researchers indicates the petition falls far short of the 7,400 signatures the New Democrats were claiming – to about half – and also contains duplicate signatures.

Once again, the Yukon Party is having to check the facts the NDP is presenting to the public, the premier said.

“As a sitting government, we know that Yukoners deserve more – a government that does its homework and clarifies the facts.”

NDP spokesman Mike Fancie said late this morning it is the premier who is doing the twisting.

The NDP delivered the petition to the legislature in two parts on behalf of Yukoners Concerned About Oil and Gas Exploration/Development, equalling 7,400 signatures, he explained.

Fancie said the wording for each part was slightly different, though both clearly called for a ban on fracking.

Because the wording was different, the clerk of the assembly only registered one of the petitions, he explained.

Fancie said Pasloski’s accusations wreak of desperation, and the bottom line is that more than 7,000 Yukoners have signed a petition against fracking.

“The government can try and undermine these facts all it wants, but it doesn’t change the fact that Yukoners do not want fracking,” he said.

Yukoners Concerned maintain they’re up to more than 8,000 signatures – all collected within ridings held by the Yukon Party.

The government has not said how long it will take to review the committee’s report and its 21 recommendations.

Left Wing US Lead Government Hood Wink Canadians on Jan 27, 2015 at 4:40 pm

So you have left wing government in the US pushing environmental agenda supported by liberal and NDP in Canada including the Yukon to stop fracking and pipelines so they can develop their own fracking resources benefits, the US future.
So if the Yukon and Canada cannot export it's gas and oil to the US, then we have the Canadians including the Yukon purchasing our oil and gas from the US. By US groups financing groups in Canada and the Yukon to stop development like the pipeline to the west coast, the Yukon does not build trust anywhere. Do the Yukon people want to purchase our energy from the US or Canada?

Who Wilf Carter on Jan 27, 2015 at 8:43 am

Who is Wilf Carter. I first came here 40 years ago and have a lot of friends here. I have worked for Northwestel before it was sold to BCE as manager of revenue requirement, CAO for Village of Teslin, Director Housing Properties and Municipal Services for CAFN in Haines Junction and Senior Advisory for Economic Development.
I want the Yukon to be better place for all Yukoners. This is my home and all I want to do is build a Yukon where my children and everyones else children can come back and find a job and make a life. My children were both born in the Yukon. I want the YTG to work right operationally. There are patches of messes in YTG which need fixing.
I am very proud of the Yukon and it is the best place to live in Canada. I have a lot work experience in housing, land development, operational management and working and living with different cultures. I try to base my statements on experience or critical analysis. I have never made statement in a paper or anything else until a year ago. I am not trying to tell Yukoners what to do as suggested. I respect that everyone has their opinion but when someone makes a personal statement without knowing the person, they affect credibility. Far as running for office, I have lost faith in the three parties of their ability to lead the Yukon because I don't see any leadership. Lots of talk no action.

Our premier became wealthy selling pharmaceuticals that end up in the environment. I have not seen a local program at drug stores that allows people an opportunity to return outdated drugs.
Darrell helped get money for the golf course, made money as a business owner and he does not really care about how his fracking friends do business.

Wilf Carter Liz Hanson and the NDP in over their head on Jan 25, 2015 at 1:12 pm

NDP continues to make statements on recycling, affordable housing, economy, schools, etc but supply no recommendations on anything. Very easy to criticize. So where is the beef in the NDP party? I like to eat meat - not nothing.

Is that what you really care for Premier Darrell Pasloski?! Industry in the Yukon!
Maybe you should think more about clean drinking water, for our future generations to come!! I want to let you all know that I bought a bottle of water, at a Tim Horton's in Alberta and it tasted like swamp water and smelled even worse!! Read the label... Bottled in High Level, Alb. Now I'll let you all just sit and think about that one for a bit. Then ask why we want a Frack Free Yukon.

Show me the accredited evidence of your statement MR. Becker on Jan 24, 2015 at 9:42 am

Your facts do not follow what the companies are doing in drilling. They are not dumping chemicals into our water system as you claim. As a matter fact, if the GasFrac system of drilling hits water the fracking will not work at all. The same as drilling using water. If they hit water, the fracking will not work. Go and talk to the well drillers. Have any of you drilled wells or been on a drill site because I have in Alberta, BC and the southern US.

Wilf Carter No one has stated how much water has being harmed by Fracking on Jan 23, 2015 at 8:16 pm

State all you want but give me the facts on fracking and what it has done to water.
I have done water testing and the effects on water by different situations in the environment. Does anyone think the Yukon Government Department of Environment will let our water be destroyed? Their name and professionalism of these good people is on the line. Do you think any other area is going to let their water be destroyed? I don't think so. Did any of you talk to people or know anything about gas and oil development? I don't think so. Just more anti development period. How much water has been destroyed by fracking? Please supply me the data. Waterton in Ontario is a good example of water issues which killed people. Get on with life in the truth zone.

The Whitehorse Trough gas reserves can be developed without fracking. Therefore there should be no logical opposition from the anti-frackers to use local non-frack gas instead of fracked LNG from the south.

Ask an anti-fracker what they think about using non-fracked local gas and you'll find out what they actually believe.

Peter Becker on Jan 23, 2015 at 3:44 pm

The GasFrac outfit from Alberta uses propane jelly as frack fluid which massively raises the level of toxicity over frack water with its 1.5 percent or so chemicals. They disperse pure toxins into high and low level aquifers versus first diluting them with water; Of course along the standard methane permeation through frack caused and interconnected pathway chaos.
Premier Pasloski fits right into green fracking and fiction fracking. The unbalanced name of the "Select Committee Regarding the Risks and Benefits of Hydraulic Fracturing" indicated a pro-frack predetemination before the frack committee even sat for the first time. "Risks" do not encapsulate that part of the problem that are guaranteed harms. "Benefits" hide the frackonomics threat to energy security of this super short lived and volatile sector as well as the standard inflation of gov debt, structural unemployment, infrastructure ruin and ordinary people losing their shirt because of reserve inflation based investment fraud (perhaps check the New York Times "Drilling Down" series that benefitted from serious whistle blowers and triggered EIA shale reserve down grades of 80 - 90 percent and more).

Petition not democratic but bias on Jan 23, 2015 at 10:51 am

If you want to complete a proper petition on an issue, you have to be objective and listen to both sides of the issue. There was no information supplied on who was not against fracking. The petition should not have been permitted in the House because it does not follow the laws of a westminister system of governance, which states you have to have proper representation from both sides of the issue.
This petition is bias and not democratic and should be total dismissed.

Wilf Carter Green Fracking on Jan 23, 2015 at 10:40 am

GasFrac an Alberta based energy services firm is one of companies that are using a process to frack that does not use any water at all.
Its called Green Fracking and they have used it 2500 times in 700 wells in Canada and the US.
Anti development NDP again you get your facts wrong on fracking so you can try to influence voters just like economic development, minimum wage, Ross River school, recycling on and on. People will not buy the line because it is not correct for the Yukon.
The Premier is totally correct when he stated fracking is being done without the use of water. I have talked to firms in the industry and fracking is totally changing how it is being done.
Research NDP and anti development group to see the facts.

Wilf Carter Real Facts of Life in the Yukon on Jan 23, 2015 at 10:00 am

The Yukon is lucky to have the economic opportunities we have because of all the different type of resources. The real issue we have is two fold.
1 You have groups that don't want any development and keep us in wealthy free state.
2 You want people who want development.
What we have two views pro verses anti.
The anti people like to make lots of noise but state nothing that people can understand or believe or trust.
The pro want development but not at any costs especially the environment.
If you go to round up next week in Vancouver you will meet people that develop business opportunities that they will invest in. They are in the business of investing and making money and creating jobs, building communities etc.
You will learn there from the investors that the Yukon has one of or not the best regulatory system in Canada for resource development.
It is very balanced in protecting the Yukon interest and environment. Investors coming to Yukon know what they have to do to do business in the Yukon.

Most of the anti develop people are over 50 years old and are retired or planning on retiring. I have talked to number of high school kids and young adults. What they want is jobs so they can earn money. They don't want to go somewhere else to work but stay in the Yukon which is their home. So all you anti development this is your future Yukon - no jobs for people and an empty Yukon with just old people left. Go to the maritimes and you will soon learn the real facts of life. Yukoners are tired of the political BS. NDP, Yukon Party and Liberals grow up or do you not know any other way to be politicians. Why don't all of you do yourself and the people of the Yukon a favor and quit so we can get people that want to make the Yukon. As one elected official said to me after the last election, the politicians have become a gong show. High school kids could do a more effective job at running the government. That is the real facts of life. Can any of you elected officials stand up in public and tell what you are going to do and then actual do it?

Wilf Carter- Yukon Party and elected member of the Yukon Party on Jan 22, 2015 at 9:21 pm

Don't do What Peter Jenkins or other members of the Yukon Party had to do in the past. I am a major supporter of what Yukon Party stands for that is right, but not what they are doing at the present time which is wrong. Elaine you know what is taking place in the public management of the Yukon Government is wrong the same as the liberals and NDP know it too. Elaine stand up and stop it. The Yukon has patches of corruption that are hurting employees and none of the parties will step up and stop it because they are more concerned about voters. Elaine stand up and do what is right and tell the facts as they are and don't let Darrell tell you any different. Darrell if you want to win the next election, stand up and do what is right or you will lost by your own hand like a lot of other leaders in Canada. Darrell you are self destructive and will not respond to your own people.

The NDP are anti everything and the Libs stand for nothing. Time goes on and nothing changes in the Yukon except more people who don't remember how tough things are when either of the two parties are in power. The YP is far from perfect but they are the only viable party right now.

Why is it that our premier refuses to acknowledge that we could have an oil and gas industry without fracking? Just because the NDP and the Liberals are opposed to fracking does not mean they are, or anyone else for that matter, is against oil and gas development. Just as the YPs strategy of division has been used on the Peel, where if you want the Peel partly protected, you are therefore against mining, full stop, they are using it again to completely polarize Yukoners. This is Stephen harpers strategy, and Darrel and his cronies have learned it well. This policy just illustrates the petty, mean spirited personalities we have governing us.

Mudslinging, outbursts, bullying, obfuscation and threats are.

For the sake of your party grow up and start acting the "the better man". There is still a chance you can salvage your term in office.
