At approximately 3:20 p.m. Monday, Whitehorse RCMP received a call about someone possibly carrying a weapon near Fourth Avenue and Alexander Street.

Officers attended the area immediately to attempt to locate the person and assess the risk level, police said today.

Out of an abundance of caution, police recommended that École Whitehorse Elementary School be placed on a hold-and-secure status.

This means that there is an emergency or high-risk situation outside, and it is not related to the school itself.

After investigating the call further, police contacted the school to clear the hold-and-secure status after about 15 minutes.

“Although the investigation is ongoing, officers believe that the item initially reported to be a weapon by the caller was not a weapon and was not being used in a threatening manner,” police said. “There were no arrests.

“Police appreciated co-operation from the school and the public as they followed up on this call.”
