NEW SCHOOL YEAR USHERS IN NEW PROBLEMS – School buses transfer students this morning at the pull-out on the Alaska Highway by the North Klondike Highway. Many area parents are unhappy with the transfer site and long rides to school. Some parents drive their children to the transfer area. No one from the Department of Education was available to comment on the concerns.

Kindergarteners bused to high school; told to walk

School is in, but getting to and from their classes appears to be proving difficult for many students around the city.

Parents have been reporting numerous problems with the school bus system on the Facebook group “Concerns with Whitehorse School Busses (sic)”.

The group was created Wednesday, with the school year starting just this week.

From routes that take more than an hour and involve a transfer (compared to a 10-minute drive), to buses that simply haven’t shown up, to Kindergarten students being dropped off at a high school and being told to walk to their elementary school, to kids being dropped off on the Alaska Highway and more, the 63 members of the group have publicized their numerous complaints about the new school bus schedule.

Many flatly argue it doesn’t work.

As one member stated: “I really feel they should just cancel this new route system and go back to old routes, seems like they were working fine.

“I know it’s about saving money but come on, it’s not working, so fix it please so we, as parents, can trust that our kids are safe and not scared and stressed out.

“It’s already hard for parents to let our children travel alone, the added stress that they may not show up at their stop is terrifying.”

Corrina Lotz, who has three kids in elementary school and another in high school, said the bus didn’t even show up this morning.

Fortunately, she leaves for work after the bus is scheduled to arrive. She was able to drive her kids, but that meant phoning the schools to explain what had happened and having the youngsters arrive late for classes.

She was late for work herself.

This comes after she already raised issues earlier about the bus stopping on the Alaska Highway rather than on Canyon Crescent after school.

Her concern is not that her kids have to walk a longer distance to get home, she said, but rather the safety risk it presents, especially in the winter.

Children will be left walking the highway – which could be icy – in the dark, with vehicles zooming by at 90 kilometres an hour.

Lotz went on to wonder aloud if a decision had been made that the morning stop for her kids would be on the highway as well, and that’s why the bus didn’t show at its usual stop this morning.

If that’s the case, she said, parents like herself weren’t informed of the change.

This marks the first time in the nine years she’s had kids in school that there have been any major issues.

Occasionally, a bus has been late, but there’s always a good reason, and very rarely, a temporary driver hasn’t realized there’s a stop at Canyon Crescent.

A call to Takhini Transport, which runs the system, had quickly resolved that issue, with a bus being sent out to pick up the kids.

She noted she has shared custody of her kids, and they’ve also had issues with the bus to their father’s residence.

This morning, Lotz couldn’t reach Takhini Transport about the bus that didn’t show up because the phone line there was continually busy.

As she pointed out, many have been trying to get through to the company to discuss the range of problems.

For its part, she added, staff at Takhini have been good to deal with, listening to her concerns about the stop on the highway.

As she and other parents have been informed, though, it’s the Department of Education which makes up the routes, with the bus drivers simply following its direction.

Takhini Transport declined to comment this morning, directing questions to Education.

Department officials did not respond to the Star’s requests for comment by today’s press deadline.

The department has acknowleged the high level of calls it’s encountering about the situation on its website, stating:

“We are receiving a high volume of calls and new bus registrations. We are processing registrations as quickly as possible and adjusting bus schedules and stops daily. The published routes reflect changes made as of August 26, 2014.

“We apologize for the delay in responding to individual questions and concerns.”

According to the Facebook group, Education will be holding a busing meeting for residents of the Mayo Road area on Sept. 3 in the gymnasium of Hidden Valley Elementary School.

Other parents have cited Education officials, blaming late school bus registration for a number of the problems.

As one entry states: “I got an email back from dept of ed today in response to what I sent them yesterday basically they are blaming the issues on parents filling out registation forms late and there will be one more big change next week....lets hope this change makes everyones busing experience better!!!”

In defense of Takhini Transport, I honestly believe that the bus company and the Department have done a great job in trying to fix most of the problems. I admit I was very frustrated with what was first occurring, but these people really tried to come to better solutions quickly. Nobody can really predict what will happen in the first weeks of school due to Whitehorse's transient, upcoming populations. it is in September that many people move from the communities or from outside the territory, thus pre-registration often does not work. Thank you for quickly deciding to resolve the original issues! I for one greatly appreciate the efforts.

When I was a kid, if you lived in the neighbourhood of where your school was, you walked. There was only 1 primary/elementary school in Porter Creek at the time and the only kids bussed there were the ones who lived out on the highway. I only started taking the bus when I was forced to go to FH as it was the only high school at the time. I WALKED for 10 years of schooling (kindergarten to grade 9).

I hear that walking is healthy for a person??
Kids were also skinnier back then. And played outside too.

@Guncache that article was not 100% accurate. Distance depends on the age and needs of the child:

Kindergarten students:
Students residing more than 0.6 km from the closest school offering the program of their choice are eligible for busing.

Elementary students(Grades 1-6):
Elementary students residing more than 1.4 km from the school closest to their residence offering the program of their choice are eligible for busing.

Special Education Students:
Special education students will be transported according to the recommendations from the Student Services Department.

Students with Special Health Conditions:
Particular health conditions may justify access to busing. Transportation will be provided as long as the condition prevails. Transportation is provided only if the request meets the criteria established by the EMSB.

No bus transport is provided for High School students. Reduced public transit is available. Of course MTL Public transport is much more extensive than Whitehorse.

I just read an article in the Montreal Gazette. If you live 1.6 km or closer you walk to school. Outside of 1.6 you can take the bus.

Shame on you, Kate Moylan! Get the correct info before you accuse people of things. I've spent hours reading and asking questions from all parties concerned. Read the contract - it's available to everyone. The bus drivers are required to take safety courses and do safety drills - IF they can get our little darlings to co-operate. They take first-aid courses (at their own expense in a lot of places) just in case your child - who shouldn't be eating on the bus - chokes. Yes, some of the bus drivers were not using their common sense this past week - possibly due to bad advice or let's hope just a misunderstanding (read: total lack of good communications between all parties) but you have no right to accuse the drivers of not having any training or having a lack of concern for our children's safety. Maybe parents should be taking the time to teach their child good street smarts (such as directions home); and a few manners would be nice.

The new bus routes were on the education web site MONTHS ago. Registrations and route changes came with their end of year report cards. If you are so concerned how your children are getting to school why would you not pay attention to this? Why would you be complaining now, and not when the changes were first introduced? Dept of Ed were open to comments and suggestions when this was in the planning stages. Now the system is up and running, now you have issue? Now little Johnny has to walk an extra block or two? Really? What do you think every child in Whitehorse and outskirts should be picked up in front of their house? Personally I think the bus routes are better than ever! Great work education! And no, I don’t work for dept of ED.

The company (not the YG government) is not invested in their bus company (tendered out)... This is another issue parents are not considering when they value their child's safety.. rotating staff, lack of training on safety...etc..

Dear 'Logic", I haven't had this problem but several friends told me that the bus drivers were driving past students and leaving them on the side of the road without stopping to ask which school they were going to. Common sense and dedication? I think not! Change is not easy for anyone and it's not going to please everyone but this pettiness won't solve anything. ALL parties have to accept some responsibility for this fiasco.

NOT all kids need to catch the bus. There are many kids who could walk to school but choose not to because some "EXPERT" said they have to take the bus. Forget the fact many kids are plain lazy. I took the bus for most of my schooling. In Ontario I walked a mile to catch the bus, which was stationed at a small rural country public school. My school was 25 miles away. Kids going to that public school walked there. When I went to Whitehorse elementary we had the option of taking an Air Force bus from Hillcrest or running across the runway and down the clay bank. Most of the time we chose the runway (it wasn't fenced back then). Is it to much to ask kids to walk a mile? Do the buses really have to stop every block to pick up some kids? Could they not go to a central pick up point? These youths are our future? YIKES!!!!

--> 'Concerned Parent' - Your are wrong when you say "These changes in order to cut down on the number of buses so that the company has more profit...". These changes come from the Department of Education. The school bus company does not make up the routes. That is the Department's responsibility. To repeat: the notion that these changes have been made to increase the company's profits is completely wrong.

The bus drivers who have been long term route drivers know their routes like the back of their hands, so why not put all the routes back because they know all their regular children with the exception of kindergartens and new arrivals to the Yukon. Then process just the kindergartens and the new comers and then later get all the other students...this will ensure that majority of students will get to school and home safely and any new comers will come out of the wood work very fast because if a bus doesn't get their child they will be calling! Relying on a computer software program to reprogram the new busing routes is clearly a flop...One thing that will surpass your computer program and will be your hugest money saver..but you stepped on toes...
Bus Drivers and common sense, dedication, and passion for their jobs! These people know every flaw in their route, where changes could be made, and know the location of every student, some get the privilege to know them by name, grade and age. And some know them very well. Wouldn't the company who has had the contract be an asset? In the last 17 years the same main people have been either a bus driver and moved to management, or be/become the owner...hmmm 17 years vs a computer program...that's the truth....
The reality is this..Yukonners are unique....The reason why your program failed was due to the fact that most Yukonners don't register their child after enrolling their child after the first time registering because drivers learn the child and parent especially places like hidden valley or Golden horn, Carcross, Watson lake and Dawson City drivers. So that is why the new program failed...because you thought a program would be better at figuring out better routes than 17 yrs times 80 + people, your program just made a huge mess and lots of stress!"

Not everyone was happy with how the buses used to run. My children were beaten, verbally assaulted and had their life threatened by high school students from PC. The high school did nothing and the bus company wasn't allowed to discipline. I for one am beyond thrilled that the bus routes changed. I see error in it and I have some issues myself but like any new system it's going to have some flaws and the department of education is trying to fix them. At least that's what they are saying. These drivers have also been given an unrealistic time table to follow and that's got to be hard. Patience and understanding will go along way. Respectful conversations and problem solving will also help. It's unrealistic to demand that we all get what we want, compromises must be made but those compromises should never ever be our children's safety!

These changes in order to cut down on the number of buses so that the company has more profit is ridiculous. The safety of our children is at stake. My 8 year old son has always been let off kitty corner from our house. Yesterday he was left at least 4 blocks away when he did not know how to get home. His bus driver told him they were not allowed to drop children off anywhere else. One group of children were left without any busing since they lived in Macintyre. Are our children's lives of any concern to these people? I am unsure.

First off I don't drive a bus and I don't work for the gov but I do have two children who ride buses. I received the registration notice with my children's' report cards and promptly registered. Granted I had to try several times but it wasn't that big of a deal. Do you really think the people doing the busing routes are mind readers? Because YOU can't be bothered to register you think it is THEIR fault that the routes aren't working? Why would they plan a route around imaginary children?
I agree the government's communications people could have done a better job of getting the word out sooner with an explanation of what they were trying to do. I think the biggest problem is that the parents of Whitehorse have been catered to for far too long. They know if they whine enough the politicians who are only worried about the next election will bend over for them. (and yes that includes those of you sitting as the opposition).
Where I came from we PAID for busing and we were NOT allowed to send our children to a school outside of our attendance area unless we paid to send them to private school. I CHOSE to live outside of the city limits here but I will not DEMAND that a bus come to my doorway to pick up my children. I will happily drive them to the nearest bus stop - if it's 10 miles so be it. It is beyond comprehension that parents here think they are entitled to busing no matter what it costs and to heck with the inconvenience it may cost some other parent's children.
Do every one of you walk your children to their friend's places after school or to the park down the street or sit at the Games Centre while your kids swim? Most do NOT - so why is it those same children can't walk several blocks to a new bus stop. If your children can't dress properly for our northern winters and walk to the bus stop maybe it's time to move south. There they can walk along a major highway for several km to get to their school...

This is all about the Department of Education saving themselves money at our children's expense. 2 of my children have been riding the school bus for a few years now and things went very smoothly until this year. My children now have to sit on the bus for over one hour as opposed to only a half hour in previous years, which makes for a very long day. But reading about the children who are being put in harm's way is truly appalling!!! I certainly hope those in power feel the public pressure and change the schedules back to what they were before.

My suggestion to the Department of Education: Don't fix it if it isn't broken, and PUT OUR CHILDREN'S SAFETY ABOVE YOUR OWN AGENDAS!!!!

Registrations should be completed before the new school year, drivers should know the routs and the bus stops should be safe for children, incompetance at its finest!
