The Yukon Little League won't be going into extra innings this season, but the Yukon's only baseball league has had a busy and successful inaugural season.
The Yukon Little League won't be going into extra innings this season, but the Yukon's only baseball league has had a busy and successful inaugural season.
The league held a season-ending barbecue celebration Sunday afternoon at the Kwanlin Dün baseball diamond in Whitehorse, where they held practices and games this season.
A good crowd, including community members, was on hand to see awards handed out.
The extraordinary barbecue featured the usual fare, plus delicious salads and watermelon.
Mr DJ was there to supply upbeat tunes for the occasion.
Many of the younger boys played whiffle ball with a plastic bat, while the older boys threw a hardball around.
Two of the young ballplayers, Tommy Skelton and Elijah Jenner, both 11, were on hand for the festivities.
Skelton, who was named one of the All Stars, said they "had a lot of fun" playing games and practicing.
Jenner said he mostly liked the games, and enjoyed the practices as well.
"It was a really fun year."
This was the first time Jenner played organized baseball. Both boys agreed that they preferred playing baseball, as opposed to softball.
Henry Skelton also won an All-Star award.
Skelton said the award was "fine," but added, "My dad is the head coach."
Skelton, who just turned 10 and is one of the youngest players, said his season was "fun."
He was asked what he liked most about his inaugural campaign in the Yukon.
"Probably the time when we first started it," he replied. "There was so little people, but it was really fun.
"Also, the Alaska thing was really fun as well," said Skelton, referring to a two-game exhibition series the Yukon Little League (YLL) had with a team from Haines, Alaska in July.
Skelton was already looking to improve next year.
"What I need to focus on is my batting, because my pitching and outfield, I've really gotten better at."
Skelton also plays second and third base sometimes.
"I don't play first very often."
Skelton prefers playing in the outfield.
As for next season, Skelton said he's "looking forward to how many people there's gonna be, because we have over 40 people that have registered, and it's just gonna get bigger."
Skelton added, "It doesn't matter if you're good or not; you just have to keep trying. Just play, because if you're having good sportsmanship, the better you're feeling, you're gonna do way better.
"You don't always have to be good at everything. Have fun and don't get upset."
Taiga Buurman, 16, was named league MVP.
"It feels great. I always wanted to play baseball, never had a league. It's always fun playing with smaller kids, showing the tricks of the trade, and getting new teammates, knowing new people; awesome."
Buurman was asked why he thought he won the award.
"I guess I was a pretty good player and got some good hits, even got one over in the trees one time; hit a dinger.
"But probably also because I'm usually pretty supportive of kids, encourage them. Being a good teammate's always a big thing for me."
There's no question Buurman will be playing again next year.
"Definitely. No doubt about that."
Buurman added, "Hopefully next year, more people will show up so we could get more teammates, new people. I'm excited."
Each YLL player received a gift bag with Major League Baseball player cards, a baseball and of course, the player's favourites, Spitz sunflower seeds.
Other All Stars included Mack Jenner (Leadership award), Mack and Grady Johnson, Lennox Lemoine, Cameron Grandy, Jack Benedict, Xavier Stehelin, Isaac Kinsella, and Tayvin Calbery (all Coaches awards).
The Star will have more on the YLL's first season, including an interview with league founders Sara and Clark Skelton, in tomorrow's print edition.
