The Yukon Wildfire 1993 girls' soccer team saved their best game for last at this year's North Shore Girls Soccer Club Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Yukon squad finished the three-day tournament with a 2-1 victory over Burnaby to take the bronze medal in a very competitive U-16 gold division.

"It was great," said team coach Patti Flather about the bronze medal victory. "I think it was not just that they won the bronze, but that they really felt that they played one of their best games and came together as a team and that things were working.

They were playing really good soccer."

The Yukon Wildfire has been training since May, which has included practices, fitness sessions, mental training and a variety of games. The team played in the women's league and saw some additional game action competing against the U-14 girls and the U-14 boys rep squads.

This was the Yukon group's first tournament all season, which was held in North Vancouver.

Last Friday, the team had a training session with Mark Parker, who is a senior program coach for B.C. Soccer and former British and South African professional soccer player.

The Wildfire began the tournament Saturday with a 1-1 tie against the West Vancouver Quest. Jaime Davignon scored the team's lone goal, lobbing the ball over the keeper into the net.

The Yukon followed up the game against West Vancouver with a 2-0 loss to Burnaby, which was also played on Saturday.

Despite a good effort in its next contest, the Wildfire ended up losing 3-1 on Sunday to the Squamish Storm. Jazmine Carey scored the team's lone goal with a perfectly placed low, hard shot.

The Yukon squad stayed focused despite nearly an hour-long game delay in Monday's rematch against Burnaby. The Wildfire came out blazing, taking the lead on a goal that was set up by Kendra Murray and finished by Jennifer Mackeigan, who was able to one-time it into the back of the net.

The group scored its second goal in the final half after a shot by Odette Rivard deflected to Mackeigan, who once again made no mistake in sending it to the back of the net.

Burnaby scored a goal of their own, but that was as close as Yukon goaltender Jenna Blanchette would allow them to get in the Wildfire's 2-1 victory.

Many of the Wildfire players will be competing for spots on the Yukon's Canada Summer Games and U-16 national squads in 2009.

Soccer players born between 1991 and 1998 can register for the coming indoor season with Yukon Soccer. Registration is today from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Sport Yukon.
