The Alaska Airlines Cup is in Yukon hands for the third straight year.
The Alaska Airlines Cup is in Yukon hands for the third straight year.
The Yukon Striker Selects U13 boys went undefeated through five games at the Anchorage tournament last weekend, scoring a division-leading 19 goals while allowing just two against.
Joe Hanson led the way with eight goals while Callum Weir earned three clean sheets between the pipes. Ashton Bryant also had a stellar tournament, striking for five goals.
The Yukon offence sputtered in the first game of the tournament Friday morning, when the squad tied the host Alaska Rush 0-0.
However, the team made up for it in the second match, beating Crossfire Alaska 10-0 on goals by Bryant (2), Hanson (2), Ivan Johnson (2), Ben Kishchuk, Andreas Lavenderos, Rhys Faragher and Sawyer Adams.
Then on Saturday, a Hanson hat trick helped the team overcome a 1-0 deficit to beat a tough Kenai Peninsula SC squad 3-1. The win helped the Yukon finish first in their group after their round-robin games.
Saturday afternoon’s semifinal pitted the team against CISC Velocity, who scored first.
But thanks to a pair of goals from both Bryant and Hanson, alongside some brilliant playmaking from the club’s only female player, Abbie Rich, helped them recover to earn a berth in the final.
The boys shut out AYSC Arsenal 2-0 Sunday to win the tournament.
Bryant had the game-winner, converting a nice pass from Hanson, who added a late insurance marker.
The championship was a rematch of last year’s final, when the territory’s U12 boys beat AYSC Arsenal 4-1.
In 2013, the Yukon squad downed the Alaska Rush 7-1 to win the U11 championship.
Other players on the roster were Lowell DeCook, Kaelen Lewis, Sammy Mather, Andrew Roberts (who broke his arm in the first game), Jason Sealy and Joah Thompson.
The tournament marked the first time the team played full-field 11 vs. 11 soccer after years of eight vs. eight, coach Jake Hanson told the Star today.
“They adjusted to the space and played well,” he said. “They did a good job of playing good soccer. The group was strong, full of teams that were competitive for us.”
Whitehorse player Skyler Bryant also attended the tournament as a guest player for Juneau in the U16 to U19 division, scoring a goal in the final, which the Alaskan capital won 2-0.
The insurance marker was the 16-year-old’s second of the tournament.
The Alaska Airlines Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament in Alaska.
More than 2,000 players compete in the annual event, which includes divisions from U10 to U19.
