Pelly Vincent-Braun continues to make a name for himself, and he’s not the only Yukon whitewater paddler doing so.
The 16-year-old was joined by fellow Whitehorse paddler Hunter Vincent, 12, at the Alberta Provincial Whitewater Canoe/Kayak Championships in Kananaskis last weekend.
There, the duo put their territory on the map, earning multiple medals en route to being named the top paddlers in their respective age groups.
Vincent-Braun earned three individual medals and was named top junior paddler, while Vincent won the title of top cadet after taking home five medals. The duo earned two more medals while racing together.
Team chaperone Lee Vincent said both Yukoners were up against at least six Albertans in their categories.
Overall, Hunter Vincent took gold in beginner C1 slalom and novice cadet C1 slalom. The beginner race marked his first appearance in a solo canoe.
The youngster also earned silver in the C1 downriver race and bronze in both the advanced cadet K1 slalom and novice cadet K1 freestyle.
Vincent-Braun, meanwhile, earned gold in the C1 downriver race, silver in advanced junior C1 slalom, and bronze in the junior freestyle, where he was the only solo canoeist facing off against kayaks.
Together, the two took gold in the novice junior C2 event and silver in the advanced C2 competition.
Lee Vincent said the territory has every reason to be proud of its current crop of whitewater paddlers.
“I was really proud of them. That’s for sure,” she told the Star today. “The overall wins came from them choosing to compete in a lot of different categories. Both of them stretched themselves.
“This was the first time they’ve ever been in a C2 boat together, so for them to go into two races and get a gold and a silver in that is pretty fabulous.”
Both the Alberta Whitewater Association and Alberta Slalom Canoe Kayak Association warmly welcomed the northerners into their training camps and competitions this summer.
Their support greatly aided the paddlers while the local club works on infrastructure and programming for local programs in the North.
The championships took place at Canoe Meadows on the Kananaskis River from Aug. 28 to 30.
The trip was made possible with support from Lotteries Yukon, the Yukon government, local fundraisers held by the club and Air North.
Vincent-Braun recently served as the territory’s flag-bearer at the Western Canada Summer Games in Fort McMurray, while Hunter Vincent is in his first full season of whitewater competition.
The two paddlers are distant cousins, Lee Vincent said.
