The Whitehorse Ski Club wrapped up the XC Nationals at Whistler Olympic Park in fine fashion Sunday in the Mass Start races.

According to Head Coach Alain Masson, the Whitehorse club finished third in the overall Aggregate ranking.

The XC Nationals ran from March 20 to March 27 at Whistler, B.C.

Individually, Sasha Masson finished first in the U20 Men 22.5 km.

“It was a little wet out there and felt like you were swimming in snow, but it was lots of fun,” said Masson.

“I didn’t have any expectations and just went with the feel today. I worked with Luke to lead the group and then pushed it on the downhill to open a gap on the backside of the course and held it. It was good to finish alone. Feels good to be a National Champion and finish the week off strong.”

Derek Deuling came in third in the race.

Dahria Beatty finished in second in the gruelling Open Women 45 km marathon.

Sonjaa Schmidt captured second in the U20 Women 22.5 km.

Aramintha Bradford rounded out the top three results with a third in U16 Girls 10 km.

On Friday, Dahria Beatty and Sonjaa Schmidt teamed up to win gold in the Women’s Team Sprint after finishing second in the overall category, according to a press release from Nordic Canada.

“It was awesome today. Sonjaa has been skiing so well all year, so I was happy to do the team sprint with her. She set the tone in the first leg giving her all and handed off to me in good position, so I went out hard in my leg too,” said Beatty.

“The last corner the whole crowd was cheering my name, so it was extra motivation to push. I was happy to ski strong and be the top Canadian team.”

The team sprint races consisted of each athlete skiing a 750-metre loop four times. Athletes tag their teammate between each leg.

Just 18 years old, Schmidt lined up against many of the sport’s elite from North America and didn’t back down.

“It was a little intimidating, but I couldn’t have done it without Dharia,” said Schmidt.

“Being with those top athletes and seeing the speed there was no time to think about it. My plan was to go out super hard. Having some fast skis helped me get out in front and it was really good.”

Alayna Sonnesyn and Julia Kern of the U.S. finished on top of the open category.

The following results included international particpants, but didn’t count towards the Canadian Nationals results.

Probably because we haven't "upgraded Mt. Mac", which of course is a priority for this white privileged, classist, Yukon Territorial Government that likes to play Monopoly with other peoples' money instead of attending to the actual concerns of THE Yukoners, like healthcare, doctors, opioid crises and the lot. I could shame this pathetic attempt for what passes as Service Canada all year and then some.
