Squash Yukon’s annual Reservoir Dogs tournament fills up quickly.
Squash Yukon’s annual Reservoir Dogs tournament fills up quickly. Partly because there is only a set number of spots open. There are six teams with six players per team. But, probably most enticing is the grand prize - 36 bottles of wine to be divided amongst the winners.
The Reservoir Dogs Tournament ran two days from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1 at Better Bodies and put all the participants through the wringer.
This particular event doesn’t run like a typical squash match, which is best of five with games to 11. Instead, at the Reservoir Dog Tournament, 25 minutes are put on the clock and a player tries to accumulate as many points as possible in the time-frame.
There was certainly talk around the courts about sore legs.
The teams of six were divided into skill-level. Each athlete in the tournament competed against the other teams’ players with the corresponding ranking. So, everyone played five games.
Noticeable on the courts were the six red cups placed along the edges. If a player struck the ball and it hit the cup flush, without a bounce, the rally was over and they earned not one, but six points.
It was a fun wrinkle to the games, and the people watching erupted in cheers whenever a cup was hit.
After the completion of the games on Friday, it was a nail-biter going into the final day of play. The Purple Team sat in first with 771 points but Green, 769, and Red, 768 were in hot pursuit. Even the fourth and fifth place teams were only four and eight points back.
Purple couldn’t hold onto their lead and fell to third getting 12 bottles of wine. The Blue team who started in fifth on Saturday jumped to second earning 18 bottles and the White Team had a strong push at the end to earn 36 bottles of vino.
Kyle Marchyuk of the Blue Team hit the most cup, 24, throughout the two days, earning himself another bottle of wine.
Each skill division was also given a bottle of wine for most cups hit.
What a perfect way to stock-up before the holidays.
