The Softball High School Challenge took place in Whitehorse Thursday at the Takhini softball complex and Pepsi Softball Centre.

The event was organized by the Yukon Schools Athletic Association (YSSA).

Three teams from CSSC Mercier, three teams from Porter Creek and two teams from Vanier Catholic Secondary School took part in the co-ed tournament.

One player from F.H. Collins took part, joining one of the Porter Creek teams.

12 games were played in the tourney.

90 kids took part in the games.

“We’re just trying to expose kids to as many sports as possible and softball is one of the sports kids can play well into their 30’s, 40’s. 50’s, whereas some other sports it’s a little more difficult. It’s a little harder on the joints for volleyball and basketball. You can still play, but softball they can play for quite a bit longer,” related YSAA Executive Director Ann Jirousek.

“Some of the students are heavily involved in other sports – hockey, volleyball and basketball, so they may not ever get a chance to play softball. For some of them, today was the first time playing outside of their sport.”

Jirousek added there are plans to change the tournament to a three-day format next year.
