Freestyle skier Miguel Rodden has a dream, and he could use a hand from fellow Yukoners.

Rodden is right now competing for a chance to attend the B&E Invitational 2015 for professional freestylers being held in Les Arcs, France this coming March.

But the 21-year-old Yukoner first needs to win a competition among 35 other skiers outside of Europe who are also hoping to earn one of the two wild card seats at the invitational.

Things are looking good so far.

As of Wednesday, Rodden was leading in the first round of an online video competition where viewers choose the best of the submissions from the 35 freestylers looking for a ride to France.

With voting on the first round scheduled to end Friday, Rodden is fairly confident he’ll be among the 15 advancing to the second round, and that’s when he could use a hand.

Only five will advance to third round, and two winners from the final five will be chosen to attend the B&E Invitational by influential pro skiers Phil Casabon, or B-dog, and Henrik Harlaut, or E-dollo.

In an interview from the Whistler ski resort Wednesday, Rodden said voting in the second round opens Saturday.

“That is definitely when I am going to need the most help,” said the 21-year-old.

“If I win I get to go to France and kind of compete with all the best in the world.”

Born and raised in the Yukon, Rodden grew up cross country skiing on the trails along the Annie Lake Road before getting hooked on downhill skiing at Mount Sima.

At the age of 12 he joined the local freestyle team and the rest is history, so to speak.

“I moved to Whistler about four years ago, and I have been skiing here ever since.”

Rodden’s video is a well-choreographed – at times intense – performance involving work on the rails and monstrous aerial flips.

It’s two minutes of discipline in a freestyle sort of way, a display of creativity and daring agility, all to the French tune “Une Pensée Pour Ceux” by Eriah, featuring Basengo.

“I think I have a pretty good chance,” Rodden said. “But yeah, some of our people are pretty good too so I’m just king of hoping for the best.

“It’s really a big opportunity for me.”

Rodden said he’s on the slopes doing this thing whenever he can between work, and some day he’d like to turn pro.

“It’s not really the best sport to get into if you are trying to make money, but definitely it’s really fun.”
