The Ryan Downing Memorial Swim Meet saw the Canada Games Centre swelling with spectators and competitors this weekend.

The annual meet, hosted by the Whitehorse Glacier Bears, welcomed swimmers from Alaska as well as local athletes.

Glacier Bears coach Marek Poplawski said he couldn't pick just one swimmer that stood out, but was very happy with the performance by his younger swimmers.

"I was impressed especially with the younger kids,” he said.

Poplawski was especially happy with their form during the butterfly events, adding that usually at meets with younger competitors the technique isn't quite there.

At this meet however, the swimmers had proper technique for the most part. Many of the young swimmers were competing for their first time.

Poplawski says the races were fantastic, and many meet records and personal bests were achieved by the swimmers at this meet.

"They were just working hard, racing hard,” he said.

With the meet over, the Glacier Bears have a few more events before the end of the year to look forward to. A few athletes will be heading to Victoria around Christmas, and six swimmers will be competing in Fairbanks next month.

Also heading to competition is recently carded athlete Alexandra Gabor, who is off to compete in Germany and Sweden next week. Gabor did well at this weekend's meet, achieving a meet record in the 50 metre freestyle event.
