Prezley Jobin has won Yukon's first medal at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG).

She paddled to the bronze in the Canoe/Kayak U16 MC1 3,000m race Monday in Halifax.

According to a Team Yukon press release, the day started sunny and calm but by race time, the wind picked up and it started to rain. The conditions caused some paddlers to capsize or get turned around but Jobin persevered through the tough conditions to capture the bronze in 39:30.364.

On the rifle range, Ava Irving-Staley got off to a great start by shooting 368 on the first day of rifle competition in the U19 female division to place first.

Lexi Fields-Birkel shot 299, putting herself in fifth.

U16 rifle shooter Jorja Ameilia Jackson had a strong day on the range. Jackson shot a 225 to place second overall with one round to go.

Jorja Bellmore-Smarch also had a strong showing in the U16 class, firing a 164, placing her in fourth.

In the U16 male class, Alex LaBarge shot 234, good for fourth heading into round two. KJ Kim is positioned in seventh.

The U14 female basketball team battled hard every quarter and saw improvement throughout their game against Wisconsin. They were tenacious and fought on every possession. The team will look to bounce back against Ontario today after a tough loss.

In volleyball, the 19U female team came out strong in the first set against Haudenosaunee but couldn’t win the race to 25, losing a close one, 25-19. They dropped the following set 25-11, and the game. The team has a day off today before taking on New Brunswick Wednesday.

Also in volleyball Monday, the 16U female team lost a close match to Ontario. The first set was 25-10 Ontario but Yukon bounced back to make the second set much closer. Ontario took that set 25-19.

The Games continue today and run until Sunday.
