Polarettes and Polar Tumblers Club looks back on season

The Polarettes and Polar Tumblers Gymnastics Club hosted the Yukon Gymnastics Championships this past weekend

By Annalee Grant on May 18, 2010

The Polarettes and Polar Tumblers Gymnastics Club hosted the Yukon Gymnastics Championships this past weekend, with all athletes from level one to five participating.

Also performing was the club's developmental group, that displayed their routines in a non-competitive format.

"It actually went really well,” said Jenn Ryan, coach for the Polarettes and Polar Tumblers.

The level one athletes performed in the morning Saturday followed by the more advanced gymnasts and the boys in the afternoon.

Ryan said one of the most exciting events the level ones performed this weekend was the floor exercises.

"The floor is always a fun one to watch,” she said. She also pointed to the floor as being the best for spectators in the afternoon.

The entire Polarette and Polar Tumblers club participated this weekend. Juneau's gymnastics club was also invited but were unable to attend.

"Overall it was a great day,” Ryan said.

The Yukon Gymnastics Championships marks the last event of the season for the competitive athletes, but not for the club.

The Polarettes are set to begin their summer recreational sessions, and Ryan said kids of any age are invited to participate.

Looking back over the season, Ryan said it was a big year for the Polarettes.

"We actually had a really good season,” she said.

Successes included level five gymnast Anna Rivard scoring a gold medal at the Western Canadian Championships, and a great club performance at the Exelca Cup.

The club also scored medals as a team at the Arctic Winter Games, a goal they had set for themselves.

The next event the club is eyeing is the 2011 Canada Winter Games. The team that will represent Yukon will be decided in the fall.
