Pat Paslawski has skipped the Yukon to its first-ever playoff appearance at the Dominion Club Curling Championships in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Paslawski's rink is enjoying an off-day after chalking up two more wins yesterday to improve to 5-1, tops in their pool.
At press time, Nicole Baldwin's team was just coming off the ice after downing Northern Ontario 5-2 in seven ends.
The win improves the women's team's record to 4-2, good for second place in their pool.
The team must now watch and wait.
If Alberta (3-2) beats Manitoba (5-0) tonight, the women's rink will play Alberta in a tiebreaker tomorrow.
"The team played really well,” Baldwin said. "A great bounceback from the heartbreaker last night.”
Baldwin's rink lost a heartbreaker 8-7 to British Columbia last night in an extra end. Down 6-3 after six ends, B.C. stormed back in the seventh, scoring four points to take the lead.
Paslawski's team hammered British Columbia 8-2 yesterday afternoon before downing Northern Ontario 7-5 to cap off their latest successful day.
Their only loss came at the hands of the defending champions from Alberta by a score of 6-2 Tuesday.
The 47-year-old Whitehorse skip said he is both shocked and thrilled at his team's early success.
"Everybody likes to see the underdog winning, and we are definitely the underdog,” he told the Star this morning.
"We're just over the moon. We're really, really happy. It shows we belong here.”
He and his teammates Doug Hamilton, Alexx Peech and Trent Derkatch will be watching the Alberta-Manitoba game with interest later today.
If Alberta (4-1) beats Manitoba, last year's runner-up, they will overtake the Yukon in the standings thanks to their win in head-to-head play.
"There's definitely some history between those two teams,” Paslawski said. "We're really hoping for Manitoba.”
Regardless of how the final standings shake out, Paslawski's team will face one of the top teams in the opposite pool in the semifinals.
Saskatchewan (4-1) currently leads the opposite pool standings, while Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Ontario are in a three-way deadlock for second with records of 3-2.
