Annah Hanthorn and Caelen Mclean posted the fastest times on the 10-kilometre course for the open category at Saturday’s Yukon Cross Country Ski Championships.

The 20-year-old Hanthorn was the fastest female with a time of 39 minutes and four seconds, while the 18-year-old McLean was the fastest male with a time of 35:11.

For their efforts, they were honoured with the Gordon Taylor Trophy.

The Schiffkorn Trophy went to Sasha Masson and Dahlia Lapointe as the fastest male and female on the five-kilometre course for the midget category.

Masson posted a time of 16:00 and Lapointe completed the five kilometres in 18:21.

Special recognition went to Lois Johnston and Dave Brook for their success at national and world masters championships in recent years.

Chief of race Grant Abbott said nobody had ever officially acknowledged a four-metal performance by Johnston at the 2013 world cup in Asiago, Italy where she won two gold, a silver and a bronze.

Johnston also had a four-medal performance at the 2012 Canadian championships, he pointed out.

Abbott said nor was there ever any official recognition for Brook’s bronze performance in the masters category at the 2011 world cup in Vernon, B.C.

The chief of race noted the 10-kilometre time for masters skier Alain Masson, a former cross country Olympian and coach of the Yukon’s cross country ski team, was just 30 seconds behind the fastest course time set by McLean.

“He still has it,” said Abbott.

The Yukon Ski Team will be in Thunder Bay, Ont. later this week for the Haywood Ski Nationals.

Abbott said conditions for the championships were ideal, with “beautifully groomed” trails running fast.

“The little snow we got was just enough to mix in with the icy snow and create really smooth, fast conditions,” he said. “It was perfect.”

Abbott said with 110 skiers signing up for championships hosted by the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club, it was the largest field of competitors in recent memory.

All races were mass starts, and skiers were allowed to use classic or skating techniques. The times are shown in minutes and seconds. Top finishers in each category were:
