TAKING A BREAK – Graham Nishikawa, seen above this morning at the Kwanlin Klassic, is not ready to decide whether he will make a run for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. The skier plans to take a break after the long World Cup season before deciding whether or not to make another attempt at the Olympic Winter Games.

Graham Nishikawa didn't have the season he wanted, missing a shot at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics after a disappointing early season.

But Nishikawa isn't quite ready to reveal his plans for 2014 without a little time away from the ski scene after a long season on the World Cup circuit.

The Star caught up with Nishikawa as he took time to give back to the skiing community in the Yukon that brought him up.

Nishikawa isn't afraid to admit that he wishes his season had gone better.

"It was a pretty big disappointment,” he said.

While he didn't make the Olympics, the skier has had a huge year on the World Cup circuit all over the world.

He started in over 17 World Cup races, and continued to build his skiing resume.

He competed in races all over Europe, and earned respectable finishes at all of them.

Nishikawa earned a first place position at the Noram races in Ottawa in January as well.

His many international starts saw him climb up the ranks as a member of the Canadian National Ski Team.

"I learned a lot,” he said.

But as for Sochi 2014, Nishikawa isn't ready to commit to a run for the Olympics in four years.

"(It's) too far right now,” he said.

For now, the Yukoner plans to spend the spring in Whitehorse and take a break after the long ski season.

That break includes hitting the trails, as he did this morning with Whitehorse students as part of the Kwanlin Klassic.

The skier said programs that get kids involved are crucial to the development of his sport.
