CORNERING — Alex Brown takes a turn on a trail last year.
Mountain biking is an exciting sport with many different disciplines.
Mountain biking is an exciting sport with many different disciplines.
One of the most popular disciplines to recently emerge is called enduro.
Enduro consists of timed downhill sections and un-timed uphill sections. Each downhill section varies in length and trail difficulty. Riders start at regular intervals and are spaced out for safety reasons.
In the case of two upcoming enduro events being put on by Cycling Association of Yukon, downhill sections range from green and blue trails for younger or less experienced riders to advanced trails – classified as black and double black diamond – for those with more skills.
The Cadence Cycle Monster Enduro will take place June 20.
This event is staged on a variety of Grey Mountain trails in Whitehorse and is about 30 km in length.
There are three timed downhill segments, with the last segment starting on a trail called Gnarwall.
The title sponsor for this event, Cadence Cycle, is providing prizes and a barbecue for all participants.
Come July 10, the Cycling Association of Yukon and its partners will celebrate the incredible trails of Dawson City with the Midnight Dome Enduro.
Sponsored by Icycle Sports and Yukon Energy, the Midnight Dome Enduro is an event open to all ages.
Kids and youth (under 17 years old) can enter for free.
There is also an adult event (over 17) with more advanced trails and a longer distance.
For kids, youth and adults participating in the Midnight Dome Enduro, there are free shuttle rides back up the mountain.
There is also a lunch and a barbecue provided by various Dawson organizations and businesses.
For both events, a portion of the registration fees will be donated by Cycling Association of Yukon to help build and maintain mountain bike trails in Whitehorse and Dawson City.
