The Whitehorse Female Mustangs will provide the closing act to a marathon women’s hockey weekend being held across the country.

On Saturday, the girls will square off at the Canada Games Centre with a select team from the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association at 7 p.m. – the final game on the schedule.

Organized by Hockey Canada, The Long Game will feature more than 2,000 players on 98 teams playing 49 games across Canada, which will run continuously.

The first puck drop will take place in Stephenville, Nfld., with the final contest taking place in Whitehorse.

“It’s fantastic to watch how many Canadians support the events and support the continued growth of the women’s game,” said Joanne Hughes, chair of Hockey Canada’s female council.

“World Girls’ Hockey Weekend is truly a nationwide event, not just with The Long Game, but with so many other development activities.”

Meanwhile, Mustangs captain Chyanne Spenner and winger Maddie Nicholson returned to action in Whitehorse last night after starring with the Terrace Kermode Female Midget team at a Tier 1 tournament in Kelowna last weekend.

Spenner, 16, and Nicholson, 13, are alternate players for the B.C. club, and both earned game MVP honours en route to a second place finish.

“It was really good hockey,” said Spenner, who played centre. “Faster than I’ve ever played.”

Added Nicholson: “It was a really good experience. All the girls were really nice.”

Terrace coach Kevin Kennedy was impressed with the play of the hard-working Yukoners.

“They’re two pretty talented players,” he told the Star. “Maddie Nicholson is a very versatile player. We asked her to play defence and forward ... she just played exceptionally well. She’s a terrific hockey player for her age.”

Meanwhile, Spenner showed her skills by sniping a couple of key goals against Salmon Arm, while also playing well defensively.

“She didn’t lose a faceoff the entire weekend, I don’t think,” said Kennedy.

We're not surprised the team is doing so well after seeing them in Niagara Falls. Go Maddie go, you rock
