WINS AGAIN – Katherine Sheepway beat out husband Darryl Sheepway to take the 10-mile skijor race Sunday at Mount Lorne.
Katherine Sheepway and her lead dog Grizzly won their fifth skijor race on the Yukon mushing circuit last Sunday.
Katherine Sheepway and her lead dog Grizzly won their fifth skijor race on the Yukon mushing circuit last Sunday.
The 30-year-old was the first to cross the finish line at the season-ending Watson Valley Grand Finale at Mount Lorne.
She beat her husband to the finish line in the 10-mile category with a time of 34:22. Darryl Sheepway followed with a time of 37:53.
The only Twister series race Katherine Sheepway did not win this season was one she did not attend at the Takhini Hot Springs Feb. 1.
Virginia Sarrazin took that event – the second of the season.
The Twister series is organized by the Dog Powered Sports Association of the Yukon (DPSAY).
Musher Jonathan Lucas saved his best for last Sunday, winning the 10-mile sled race with a time of 35:58.
Lucas bested Armin Johnson, a two-time race winner this season, by 18 seconds.
Alexandra Rochat rounded out the top three.
In total, seven mushers took on the hard, fast route.
Other race winners this season include Crispin Studer, who claimed two titles, and Marine Gastard.
A four-mile recreational event was also held Sunday with seven competitors taking part.
Katherine Sheepway – the lone skijorer – also won that event, with a time of 18:36. Darryl Sheepway and Deb Knight finished second and third, respectively.
Overall, the 2015 DPSAY winter season finished the same way it started, with another race held at Mount Lorne.
Participants were treated to sunny skies and great competition.
After the races, the day’s events wrapped up with an awards ceremony under the pavilion at the community centre, alongside food served by Ron and Kristin of Easy Street Treats.
With summer on the horizon, the focus of DPSAY will turn to the Hot Hounds dryland race series.
