Langbakk wins expert division in orienteering championships

A total of 34 participants turned out Wednesday evening for the Yukon Orienteering Association’s Long Distance Championships.

A total of 34 participants turned out Wednesday evening for the Yukon Orienteering Association’s Long Distance Championships.

The championships were held in the Long Lake area behind the hospital.

Categories ranged from a novice course of two kilometres to 6.2 kilometres for the expert division won by Brent Langbakk.

Langbakk finished in 52 minutes and 55 seconds, two minutes and 28 seconds ahead of Trevor Bay’s time of 55:23.

Afan Jones finished third among the seven experts who ran the course in a time of 63:39.

Kerstin Burnett finished first in the advanced division, completing the 4.7 kilometre course in 68:28. Ryan Kelly was second in 75:49 and Bob Sagar placed third with a time of 80:39.

On the intermediate course of 3.7 kilometres, Savannah Cash placed first with a time of 44:20, followed by Lara Melnik in 54:15 and Ev Pasichnyk in 73:57.

Andrea, Sven and Johan McNeil along with Bas Bower finished tied for first on the novice course with Pippa McNeil and Stian Langbakk in a time of 29:14.

Elvira Knaack and Maura Glenn finished in 46:45 while the Von Tongeren family clocked a time of 48:26, just a shade faster than the Koh family’s time of 49:04.

The championships were organized by volunteers Violet van Hees, Kerstin Burnett, Afan Jones, Bob Sagar and Ross Burnett.
