The long and winding road of the Whitehorse Rapids Soccer season finally came to an end, with a straightforward win for Klondike Business Solutions over Yukon Brewing.

The season has been interrupted twice and beset by injuries, but due to the resiliance and enthusisasm the league finished in style.

KBS were too good for Yukon Brewing as Jason “man of” Steele led the way with two goals and there was two goals for Keith Maguire and one for Hector Lang.

Yukon Brewing got a consolation through Kruno Kunovic who had league legend Charlie Hoeller playing for them in goal.

The reason he was there was because he responded to an old email from 2015, asking if he could play the morning game.

We wondered what he had been doing for seven years, but the best bet was that he had been abducted by aliens and had his body parts harvested for scientific purposes.

Both teams have to play each other in the first round of the playoffs, so it will be interesting to see how both teams react.

Carre gets back
the Golden Boot

After a multi-year hiatus Justin Carre regained the league’s leading scorer award.

In doing so, he lead Pepsi to the runners-up spot and are strong favourites for the playoff title.

Carre has been inspirational for his side, and he picked a goal as Pepsi rounded out a very successful season with a 3-2 win over Air North Rangers.

With both teams having an eye on the playoffs, this game was played at an exhibition pace, which suited both sides.

Pepsi’s team is packed with talent, and when they rouse themselves to score, they usually do.

Renaissance man Chris Stacey finished off a profitable campaign with his sixth goal, with Jan aalt van den Hoorn adding Pepsi’s other goal.

Air North haven’t hit the heights of last term, but are still a tough team to break down.

Golden Boot runner up Miles Hume got his 17th goal for the blues and there was one for David Rayo as well.

Yukoninfo.com win with a little
help from their friends

Yukoninfo.com finished the season in style with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Driving Force.

Due to injuries, Info picked up three players and what a pick up they were.

Juergen Korn, Valerii Shapoval and Creed Sween were all superb, giving everything, even though this was their second game of the morning.

All three had good chances to score, but only Shapoval netted.

Matthias Hartmann grabbed two goals for the league champions and there was one for Keith Maguire.

Yukoninfo.com were good value for the win as they showed the class that took them to the title.

Driving Force showed the spirit that has buoyed them during the season, but they were outdone by the movement and passing of the Info team.

Skipper George Maratos, playing out of his net, scored the Driving Force goal.

Caldwell finishes off KBS

Craig Caldwell was the rapier that put Klondike Business Solutions out of their misery in the first playoff of the postseason, as Yukon Brewing ran out 3-1 winners.

Like a mongoose circling a cobra, each team waited for the other to strike, before hitting the opposition on a counter attack.

During the first half, the defences were in charge.

Hector Lang for KBS and Kruno Kunovic for Yukon Brewing were both in fine form for their teams.

After the break, Fabian Glyka opened the scoring for KBS as he slid in to knock the ball past a stranded Sean Macdonald.

Hector Lang gave KBS hope with a well-worked team goal. However, as KBS began to tire after the monumental effort they put in, Caldwell stepped up with two quality strikes that finally broke the will of KBS.

The result proved to be a real upset as Yukon Brewing, who finished bottom of the league, turned the form charts on its head, as they showed heart to respond in the way they did.

The Brew have a real chance to go all the way now.

Air North Rangers outlast
Driving Force

The second playoff game saw an attritional game in which Air North held their nerve to beat a plucky Driving Force 3-2.

Like most playoff games, the opening exchanges were tight, with both teams trying not to make a mistake.

George Maratos opened the scoring with a goal blasted into the net, before Miles Hume equilized for the boys in blue.

Sick skipper Iain Breckenridge scored to put Air North back into the lead, only for Jesse Koeller to level the score for Driving Force.

With the clock ticking down and the prospect of penalties looming, a combination of Derek Funk and Miles Hume managed to bundle the ball past a prone Sean Macdonald, to seal the win for Air North.

Air North have overcome a lot of adversity to move into the semi finals, when they play Pepsi at 10 a.m.

The other game sees Yukoninfo.com take on Yukon Brewing at 11:00 a.m.

Come and enjoy the greatest show on turf at the Canada Games Centre on Saturday morning.
