Tuesday was a big day for the Yukon's junior female curling team at the Arctic Winter Games.

The team is currently enjoying a two game winning streak, after dropping Monday's opening round robin game to Northern Alberta.

Heading into today, Team Yukon was tied for first place in its pool with the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.).

As of Tuesday each had a record of 2-1, while both Alaska and Northern Alberta were close behind at 1-1.

"The girls are peaking right now and they have been curling really well," said team coach Lindsay Moldowan.

"I think that right now they have just clicked and this is definitely the best I have seen them play all year."

Today's game against Nunavut will conclude the round robin play for Team Yukon and barring a tie the girls will know their placing in the five team pool by tonight.

The game against Northern Alberta was a close contest, which came down the final shot in the 10th end.

After trailing by a few points in the fifth end, Team Yukon came back and was one up going into the 10th end without hammer.

With the final shot and Team Yukon lying two, the skip from Northern Alberta made a very difficult double takeout to win the match 9-6.

The Yukon team's next game was on Tuesday morning against the N.W.T.

This was also a close matchup as both teams traded points with neither one being able to go gain a comfortable lead.

Team Yukon was once again coming into the 10th end without the hammer and had to steal a point to win the game.

After Team Yukon placed a rock into the four foot they went into defensive mode, guarding the rock up until the N.W.T.'s last shot.

With the hammer, the N.W.T. skip had to draw to the button to win, but she ended up being just a little bit outside and hit a guard, giving Team Yukon its first victory at the Arctic Winter Games. The final score was 8-7.

As good as the Team Yukon girls were against the N.W.T., they were even better in their next game on Tuesday afternoon.

The girls played a great match in their 8-5 victory over Alaska and were up in points pretty much the entire contest.

In the fifth end, Team Yukon had a decisive four-point lead, but Alaska was able to come back, scoring three points in one end alone to get back into the game.

Team Yukon wouldn't be fazed by this and continued to put points on the board. In the final end the girls simply ran Alaska out of rocks to go onto the win

The two victories on Tuesday went a long way for the team's goal of winning a medal the event.

The top four teams in the pool will qualify for the semi-finals, with the top team facing off against the fourth placed team and the team that comes in second will play against the third place finishers.

Moldowan said today's game against Nunavut will be the determining factor regarding the team's overall placing in the standings.

"We definitely need to win to be in a comfort zone and then it just basically depends on what happens with the other games," she said.

"We only look at it one game at a time and right now we are just looking forward to the game (today) against Nunavut and hoping to curl our best and come out with a win out of that one.

Then whatever happens after that we just have to take it one game at a time."

She said she is confident about the team being able to win a medal at the event.

"I am confident in their ability to win a medal, but it is all in their hands," Moldowan said.

"If they can continue to play the way that they have been playing then I don't see them having a problem, but again this game can turn at any moment."
