Three years in,
Three years in, the Whitehorse Huskies captured the Coy Cup and the hearts of fans packed into Takhini Arena for BC Hockey Senior AA’s Championship final.
“That’s why we play. That’s why we’re here. That’s why we work so hard all year and it’s kind of surreal right now that everything clicked,” said Huskies captain Evan Campbell. “I’m so proud of everybody in the room.”
Fielding a full bench, the Huskies welcomed back goalie Jon Olthuis, who suffered an apparent knee injury in their first round-robin game.
“I don’t think we could have made a wrong decision,” said coach Mike Tuton. “I mean JJ could have been our MVP for what he did during the week to get us here and the boys will never forget that.”
Quelling a late comeback by the Kelowna Sparta in the third period, the Huskies celebrated the 7-4 win, piling on to Olthuis in the Huskies end.
They accepted their gold medals and took turns hoisting the Coy Cup.
Here’s more action from the memorable final.
