Squash Yukon held their annual Andrew Bielz Memorial Tournament Friday and Saturday at Better Bodies in Whitehorse.

Henry Beairsto and Nikhil ("Mr. Greene") Sharma went the distance in the Men's B final, playing a full five-game set.

"That was a heck of a game. Very competitive," said Sharma. "To the wire, all of the games. It's a good end of the season for me because I'm leaving for my back home. It's good to end it on the winning side and he's a winner too cause he put me in a very hard game. I liked the game. All the contestants were really good."

Beairsto said "There were no points from missed shots … you had to work for every point."

Sharma added "Thank you Squash Yukon for giving me this opportunity for the third time. I love this organization."

"I'm going back home (to India) for a while for a four-month vacation. I'm going for my marriage."

Gyanendra Singh defeated Sam Penner three games to love in the final of the Mixed Open. He said it was a well-played match.

"It was great," Singh said. "Sam was in a good form. He did some very nice drives. It was very good with the drops and all.

According to Singh, Penner is one of the top players in the club.

"Sam was giving me a good fight at the beginning. And then the second game I got back into the game and then from there I just took it again."

Singh said it was an amazing weekend.

"We had an amazing tournament here. This tournament was in the memory of Andrew Bielz. He was one of the top players in town and he died because of cancer. So we were celebrating this tournament this weekend in his memory. And we did fundraising and whatever money comes in to this tournament will go to the cancer society here in town.

$1105 was raised for the Yukon Cancer Society.

Singh said "We are not into just engaging people to play in tournaments but we are trying to support the community and really we want to … get everyone healthy through squash. That's what we are trying to do."

Singh added "At Squash Yukon, we've got lots of programs … for all ages, all playing levels, so people, whoever (is) willing to play squash, just contact me."

Singh can be reached at 867-332-3960 or by email at squashyukon.coach@gmail.com

"We are willing to help anyone who's willing to play squash. Squash is for life."

Squash courts are available at Better Bodies from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

League matches happen Tuesdays and Thursdays. They also have a drop-in program, clinics and workshops for various playing levels.

"We have (a) very vibrant junior program," said Singh.

The junior program takes place Monday to Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.

It's divided into four groups: Learn to Play (age six-nine and nine to 12), Learn to Train (an intermediate group of juniors) and the Canada Games squad.

"We've really got a strong team for the Canada Winter Games," said Singh.

14 players in the 13-17 age group are competing for four male spots and four female spots. Selection for the Canada Winter Games takes place in January.
