Gross’s stunning free kick hits the highlight reel

Sandy Gross got out of bed in a good mood,

Sandy Gross got out of bed in a good mood, combed his beard and headed to the CGC with a spring in his size four shoes. Up against the league leaders Pepsi, Gross led his team to glory with an imperious performance, winning the game 3-2.

Gross’s partner in crime, Graham Sim, opened the scoring with a beautiful shot into the top shelf.

Then veteran Keith Maguire got the second for Driving Force before Gross’s moment of brilliance.

Standing over a free kick 20 yards out, there didn’t look like there was anything on, but inspired by a single voice from the stands above, like a message from God himself, Gross curled the ball over and around the wall and left keeper Stu Knack rooted to the spot as the ball soared into the back of the net.

With Driving Force now holding a 3-0 advantage you would expect Pepsi to fold, but they weren’t league leaders without reason, as top scorer Franklin Fru added another two goals to his total and gave Pepsi hope.

Alas, Driving Force held on to leapfrog Pepsi and sit on the pile for another week.

Hosford’s double help
Chieftain win

Matt Hosford is having a wonderful debut season, scoring goals, attacking hard and tees up his teammates to strike home. All these attributes were in evidence on Saturday at CGC, as his Chieftain team beat Yukoninfo.com 3-2 in over-35 soccer action, as Hosford claimed two goals for himself.

Chieftain put in good performances all over the turf. Brian Bruckman was a rock in defence, while skipper Kruno Kunovic flogged himself to exhaustion in the winning cause.

For Yukoninfo.com this was their fourth-straight defeat, as they huffed and puffed, but couldn’t blow the Chieftain house down. Again Info was indebted to Ernst Cao in net, who kept the score down with some heroic saves. Cao’s valiant effort almostt paid off with Tebego and Matt Larsen scoring goals for Info, but a goal from Marcelo Gortari sealed a fine win for Chieftain.

Bores covers himself in
glory and blood

Michael Bores looked like he was an extra for Friday the 13th after his nose exploded when it connected to an opponent’s elbow. However he was able to clean himself up and his appetite for scoring didn’t dim, as he secured a big win for Yukon Brewing, 3-2, over Klondike Office Systems.

There is not a harder working team in the league than Yukon Brewing. They put the pedal to the metal from the opening kickoff right through to the final whistle. In between it is a blood and guts performance, exemplified by Ciaran Connolly, Gabe Stetkiewcz and Bores.

There is also some classy players in the team like Pete ‘Tin Can’ Mather and Eric ‘The Big Easy’ Murphy who are able to pull the strings if needed.

KOS put enormous pressure on the Brew, but they didn’t buckle even after a goal by the excellent Mark Chandler.
