DOWN THE TRAIL – The Yukon Arctic Ultra athletes head out from Whitehorse Saturday.
Jessie Gladish continues to maintain her lead in the 2023 Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra.
Jessie Gladish continues to maintain her lead in the 2023 Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra.
Dawson City's Gladish was on her way to Scroggie Creek at mile 272 as of approximately 11 a.m. this morning. Her Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) on her fat bike at Scroggie Creek is around 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. She was 66.5 miles from the waypoint.
Scotland's Matt Weighman was still holding down second spot at mile 268. He was 3.8 miles from Pelly Farm this morning. His ETA at Pelly Farm is 1:10 p.m. today.
The athletes in third to fifth are closely bunched up.
Taiwan's Tommy Chen was in third at mile 239. Chen is 32.9 miles from Pelly Farm.
Gareth Hardcastle of England had passed Italy's Laura Trentani and was also at mile 239.
Trentani was in fifth at mile 236.9.
All of the top five, with the exception of Gladish, are doing the 430 mile race to Dawson on foot.
Race organizer Robert Pollhammer, in an update on Facebook yesterday, said that Pat Cooke-Rogers of England had problems with her bike but got help from race organizers.
"This help does mean a time penalty but at least Pat now can ride her bike again and does not have to worry about the (time) cut-off."
Cooke-Rogers was at mile 169.5 as of 11 a.m. this morning.
Meanwhile, skier Tania Halik of Invermere, B.C. was forced to scratch when she didn't make it to Carmacks before the time cut-off on Wednesday.
"We were constantly monitoring the progress of Tania Halik, hoping she would arrive in Carmacks in time," said Pollhammer. "Unfortunately, Tania won't get here before 22:30. Therefore, we will bring her out. It's of course a shame (as it always is) because it is very obvious that Tania would easily make it to Dawson if she would have a bit of extra time."
The Star will have another update in tomorrow's paper.
