Gavin McKenna has been named WHL Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.
According to a Western Hockey League press release, the 16-year-old led all WHL players with three goals, four assists and a plus-two rating in two games as the Tigers went 1-0-0-1 for the week.
McKenna opened the floodgates in a high-scoring first period against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Jan. 26 when he flew down the wing and snapped the puck past Moose Jaw netminder Jackson Unger.
McKenna capped off a three-goal run by burying his 20th of the season with a furious one-timer two minutes and 48 seconds after his game-opening goal.
McKenna helped set up the game-tying goal with 14 seconds left in the game, although Moose Jaw won it in a shootout.
McKenna was rewarded with second star honours.
In a rematch the following night, McKenna set up the opening goal.
In the third, McKenna wound through the opposition in search of a teammate, but his attempted pass took a fortuitous bounce off a Warriors’ stick and deflected into the Moose Jaw net to tie the game at three.
McKenna would assist on two more Tigers goals as Medicine Hat clawed its way to a 5-3 win.
This time, McKenna was named first star.
The previous week, McKenna was second among all WHL skaters in points with two goals, five assists and a plus-4 rating in four games as Medicine Hat went 2-1-1-0 on the week.
In a January 16 tilt against the Swift Current Broncos, McKenna tallied a goal and two assists.
McKenna reached the 50-point milestone and was named third star.
McKenna scored the lone goal for the Tigers with a power play blast through traffic against Red Deer on Jan. 19, though the Rebels would snag a 2-1 victory.
The 6-foot, 165-pound left winger erupted again for three assists to wrap up the week with a 7-2 win against the Brandon Wheat Kings. McKenna earned second star of the game.
The 2026 NHL Entry Draft-eligible forward is second in the WHL rookie scoring race with 21 goals and 42 assists in 41 games.
His 1.54 points-per-game average is first among all CHL first-year players.
McKenna attributes his success to his line mates and a strong team.
"Me and my line have really been clicking for each other, which has definitely helped my success, and my team has been playing really well, so that brings me a lot of confidence."
McKenna's line mates continue to be Oasiz Weisblatt and Hunter St. Martin.
