Yukon swimmer Alexandra Gabor is continuing to hold top ranks with some of the world's best.
Over the weekend, the Yukoner was the lone representative for the Whitehorse Glacier Bears at the 2010 Mel Zajack Jr. International Swim Meet at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver and took top 10 finishes in all five of her events, competing against swimmers from across the country, the U.S., China and Australia.
Her top finish came in the 200 metre freestyle event where she finished third in the A final with a time of 2:02.52. That put her just behind Canadian Olympian Julia Wilkinson of the Island Swimming team, who ended with a time of 2:01.60. First place finisher, and also an Olympian from the U.S., Dana Vollmer of the California PC group, ended the event with a final time of 1:58.41 for the top position.
In both the 400 m and 100 m freestyle events, Gabor swam to fourth place finishes with times of 4:19.62 in the 400 m final and 57.43 in the 100 m.
The longest of her races, the 800 m freestyle, saw the Yukon swimmer finish in fifth with a time in the final of 9:04.36, while it was the shortest race, the 50 m freestyle, that saw her lowest placing at the competition in seventh. Her time in that race was 27.25 just behind Natasha Fung of the
Olympian Swim Club who had a final time of 27.03.
In an e-mail correspondence this morning, Whitehorse Glacier Bears media liason, Gustav Gabor, commented that while Alexandra didn't have her best finish times at the competition, she still did well bringing home one bronze medal and coming close to more.
"Considering Alex(andra) ... is in the midst of a very intense and tough training cycle, she did very well,” Gustav wrote, later making note of Alexandra's next goal in her swimming career.
"Alex(andra) is continuing to train extremely hard with her goal of becoming a member of the Canadian Pan Pacific Championships team.”
Pan Pacific trials are scheduled to be held in Victoria at the end of July.
