Yukon’s top soccer stars gathered at the Canada Games Centre last week for a much-loved holiday tradition.

And the competition was closer than ever.

Held Dec. 23, the Yukon Selects annual Christmas Soccer Showcase saw two games finish with tie scores and another decided by one goal.

The evening began with a women’s game, pitting the Women’s Selects against the Total Soccer Excellence (TSE) Academy Girls All-Stars.

The younger squad prevailed with a 2-1 win thanks to goals by Megan Lanigan and Camille Galloway.

Jaylene Kelly scored for the Selects on a nice header in the second half, but that was all her squad could muster.

A Jr. Strikers Selects intrasquad game was held at intermission, ending in a 2-2 draw.

Divided by age group, Ewan Halliday and Jake Charlton scored for 2001/2002 team, while Joe Hanson and Ben Kishchuk replied for the 2003 squad.

The men’s game capped the evening, ending in a 1-1 draw.

Kurtis Hills gave the Men’s Selects the lead on a free kick, before TSE player Dominic Korn levelled it in the dying seconds.

Many players are members of Canadian university and college teams, and were home for the holidays.
