EDI clinches first place in Whitehorse Oldtimers hockey standings
EDI toughed out a 6-2 win over CapriCMW on Sunday at Takhini Arena
EDI toughed out a 6-2 win over CapriCMW on Sunday at Takhini Arena to cement first place in the regular season standings of the 2023-24 Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League. EDI was led by Willy McKenna and Gus Morberg with two goals each, with singles from Ty Heffner and Vernon Asp. Dave Bakica netted both for eighth-place Capri.
All the playoff seedings have now been determined, and playoff action will start on March 25 when EDI takes on Air North. Capri plays their first playoff game on March 27 against third-place Tim Hortons.
Kilrich 5, Yukon Inn 3
Kilrich clinched fourth place in the standings with their win, getting two goals from Ben Kielb and one apiece from Mark Pike, Shawn Kinsella and James Pugsley. Inn markers came from Frank Aucoin, Greg Lane and Brad Hameister. Kilrich takes on Tim Hortons on April 4 in their first playoff match, and fifth-place Yukon Inn faces off against EDI on April 2.
Tim Hortons 6, Air North 0
Floyd McCormick earned his second straight shutout subbing for the Timbits. Josh Savill was in on all the action with two goals and four assists. Dave Wipf added a pair, and Adam O'Dell and Stu MacMillan collected the others. Tims plays Capri in their first playoff game on March 27, and ninth-place Air North's first action is March 25 vs league champs EDI.
Titanium Storage 6, Firth 6
Scott Palfreyman scored Titanium's final three goals, including the game-tying tally with 4:55 left, to give the Titans the tie. Lance Bevilacqua, Chad Cowan and Scott Legge also dented the twine for sixth-place Titanium. Seventh-place Firth was led by two scores each from Devon Slade and Kevin Topping, and one each from Wayne Potoroka and Norm Watson. Titanium's first playoff game is against second-place Medicine Chest on April 5, and Firth squares off against the same Medicine Chest on March 26.
Thursday
CapriCMW 10, Firth 3
The Capri line of Arlo O'Riordan, Kevin Johnstone and guest player Luke Johnson went a little nuts in this one, amassing a total of six goals (two each) and 14 assists. Dale Gray added two of his own, and Brian Koop and Dave Bakica each potted one. Firth marksmen were Kevin Topping with two and Devon Slade with a single.
Yukon Inn 6, EDI 5
Frank Aucoin completed his hat trick with only 16 ticks on the clock in this exciting match. Sean McLeish added two and Brad Hameister one for the short-staffed Inn crew. Dustin Heffner led EDI with two goals, and solo efforts were registered by Vernon Asp, Gus Morberg and Rick Gingell.
Wednesday
Medicine Chest 3, Titanium Storage 2
Scott Olafson scored the game winner midway through the second period to lift MC to the win. Geordan Clark and Garrett Kuptana also connected. Titans goals came from Scott Palfreyman and Kerry Pettitt.
Kilrich 4, Air North 4
Nate Clark's second goal of the game with 1:06 left earned the builders the point. Ryan Martin and Ben Kielb also scored. Four different skaters popped the water bottle for Air North – Ed van Randen, Colin Nash, Mike Sage and Brian Currie.
With two games to go on Wednesday, EDI finishes atop the standings with 60 points (29-9-2). Medicine Chest sits second with 57 points (28-10-1) with one game left for them to play. Tim Horton's finishes in third with 51 points (22-11-7).
The Chest's Jamie Cairns leads the league scoring derby with 89 points (38 goals, 51 assists) in only 34 games with a chance to pad his totals Wednesday.
Timmy's Josh Savill sits second with 79 points (49 goals, 30 assists).
EDI's M and M duo, Morberg (37 goals, 39 assists) and McKenna (42 goals, 34 assists), end up tied for third with 76 points each.
Firth's sniper Devon Slade sits atop the Rocket Richard standings with 51 goals in only 31 games with a chance to add to his impressive total Wednesday. Sniper Savill finished with 49, followed by Mckenna with his 42.
Cairns collected the biggest basket of apples this season with 51. Morberg was second with 39, and McKenna had 34 helpers.
Among goalies, Tim's Paul Dainton finished with the league's best Goals Against Average, 1.57.
The Chest's Gerald Tetlichi was second with a 3.40 GAA. Rounding out the top three was Kilrich's Jim Antonisson.
Tetlichi led in goalie wins with 25, followed by Antonisson with 18 and EDI's Stacy Bowden with 15.
