The Yukon girls’ hockey team bounced back with a big win over N.W.T today at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I.
It was their first win of the Games following two losses.
Yukon came out firing in the first period and never looked back.
Taylor Bierlmeier, who had a strong game for the Yukon, opened the scoring two minutes into the game.
Emery Twardochleb made it 2-0 with a good shot from the slot with 8:57 left in the first period.
21 seconds later, Charlotte Siksik cleaned up a rebound to make it 3-0.
With 6:02 left in the first, Cassie Cebuliak made it 4-0 off another rebound.
N.W.T. got on the board late, Jenna Alexis Demarcke putting a shot from the slot through Yukon goalie Wynne Anderson-Lindsay’s legs with only 20 seconds left in the period.
The first ended with Yukon up 4-1.
A mostly uneventful second period picked up with Yukon captain Arnica Bulmer, who had another strong game for Yukon, ripping a shot into the top of the net with about three minutes left in the period.
Yukon got a power play with 1:50 left, but Anderson-Lindsay was forced to make back to back saves on a breakaway by Jaci Dusome, including a diving stop on the rebound.
The second ended with Yukon up 5-1.
Both teams exchanged chances in the third, with Yukon getting most of them.
Twardochleb finally broke through for the Yukon with a wraparound goal with 8:16 left in the third for her second of the game.
The game ended 6-1 for the Yukon girls.
The girls had dropped a hard-fought 6-1 decision to Newfoundland and Labrador Tuesday in Charlottetown.
Yukon’s Emery Twardochleb drew a hooking penalty on a breakaway with 9:03 left in the second period. That meant one thing – a penalty shot. Twardochleb didn’t disappoint, deking to the right and then burying the puck in the left side of the net to get Yukon on the board.
Meanwhile, the mixed doubles curling team of Bayly Scoffin and Nico Fecteau got to be part of Canada Games history.
The duo was one of the first draws today, kicking off the first-ever mixed doubles event at a Canada Winter Games.
The pair did well to find the house and score in the final frames but fell to their Alberta opponent 10-2.
Stian Langbakk and Lewis Bunce had an excellent day on the snowboard slopestyle course. Both made the finals after turning it up in their heats, with Langbakk finishing fifth overall and Bunce 12th.
The alpine team competed at Crabbe Mountain, a satellite venue in New Brunswick. The team’s first competition of the Games was the Super G where Ellayann Dinn and Carson Nelson put up the quickest Yukon times. Tori Vollmer didn’t finish the course.
Badminton was in full swing Tuesday with doubles, mixed doubles and singles matches. In Male Singles, Anton Menzel won his first game 2-0 against P.E.I.’s Tom Pham but lost his third round match to Gurbaksh Saini of B.C. and is out of the competition.
In cross country, Simon Connell had the Yukon’s top finish in the boys’ 10 km race, 15th. Constance Lapointe finished 11th in the girls’ 7.5 km.

What a superb result for Yukon girls! Very well done to all of them. I’m biased of course, as Emery Twardochleb , is my great niece! So delightful to be sitting in Ireland and reading this about her and her team mates. 🙋♀️👏
