Cross Country Yukon's athletes gave their all at the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) trials this past weekend.

The Star spoke with Cross Country Yukon Head Coach Graham Nishikawa and Assistant Sport Coordinator Jen MacKeigan at Mount McIntyre Saturday after the Skate style trials.

The Classic trials went Sunday at Mount Mac.

Nishikawa said the trials went "really well. We had lots of people trying out for the Arctic Winter Games. Beautiful day.

Great conditions.

"We had a lot of volunteers out practicing using chip timing. So it was helping our officials get trained for major events as well."

MacKeigan said 34 skiers took part on Saturday in U14, U16 and U18 age groups.

Three skiers per category qualify for the Arctics.

Nishikawa said there were a lot of great performances from the kids.

According to Nishikawa, the athletes gave it their all.

"There were lots of kids collapsing at the end. They gave everything they had. It was great to see. The effort all around was incredible."

Logan Tirschmann competed in the U16 6km category, finishing fourth on Saturday.

"I don't know the results yet, but the race felt good," related Tirschmann. "It was nice and fast but the uphill was very hard."

Tirschmann, 14, joined the cross county program six years ago.

"I used to be skiing out at Mt. Lorne since I was young."

As for the conditions at Mount Mac, Tirschmann said they were "good."

Tirschmann competed in the 2023 Arctics in Wood Buffalo in snowshoe biathlon.

"It was fun," he said.

Tirschmann added, "Thanks to all the volunteers for coming out and making this possible."

MacKeigan said the team just got back from a competition in Canmore, Alta.

"We took some U16, U18, U20 kids down, had some fun races there and now we're back for AWGs."

Asked how it went in Canmore, Nishikawa replied, "Really good. The team's improving well. Lots of personal bests. It was good."
