Climb Yukon hosted the Yukon Bouldering Championships last Saturday at the Porter Creek Secondary School gym in Whitehorse.

The male and female winners in the Competitive competition booked their tickets to the Canadian Senior National Boulder Championships in Quebec City, Nov. 27-28.

The event was organized by Climb Yukon’s president of the board, Samantha Li, and Lauren Ray, the director of community engagement.

Olympic Sport Climbing athlete Alannah Yip of North Vancouver was instrumental in assisting with the competition by setting up the climbing routes.

Yip ran two workshops prior to the competition: Intro to Climbing Coaching and Intro to Route Setting.

According to Ray, Yip “provided invaluable support for the running of this competition ... she also spent some time with the youth team and did an awesome job setting for the competition.”

More than 40 athletes competed in the competition, a new record.

The event also featured the first non-binary athlete competing in the Open category. Erin Corbett captured that category.

Samantha Li finished first in the Open Female category and Marshal German finished first in the Open Male category.

Due to work commitments, they will be unable to compete in the Nationals. Replacements for them will be determined.

Kate Koepke and Hunter Long took top spot in the Youth A Female and Male categories, respectively.

Matthias Frostad was the winner in the Youth B Male category.

Linnaya Searson and Jaxson Long took top honours in Youth C Female and Male.

Clara and Ben Eshpeter finished first in the Youth D Female and Male categories.

Saturday’s event also featured 11-and-under and Recreational categories.

Sierra Allen finished first in the Rec Female category, while Andrew Serack climbed to first in the Rec Male category.
