The first big moment for Team Yukon at the Canada Summer Games has come courtesy of the men's volleyball team.
The first big moment for Team Yukon at the Canada Summer Games has come courtesy of the men's volleyball team.
The club secured the territory's first-ever volleyball win last night with a stylish 3-0 win over Prince Edward Island.
Game scores went 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18.
"It was a pretty big accomplishment for them for sure,” said head coach Russ Tait when reached in Sherbrooke, Que. this morning. "This is the first time that anybody's actually beat a province in a match.”
The win has been a long time coming, as the territory's involvement with the Canada Games dates back to the original tournament held in Quebec City in 1967.
The men's volleyball team opened their Games with a 3-0 loss to powerhouse Ontario on Saturday, then dropped another 3-0 decision to New Brunswick.
Sunday morning began with a third straight 3-0 loss to the hands of Saskatchewan, but then came the matchup versus P.E.I.
"P.E.I. is more equitable physically with us, and same with Newfoundland as well,” Tait explained. "It was a fun match. The kids were steady right from the word go.”
Co-captain Lowell Tait's steady serve was a big factor, as were strong defensive digs from co-captain Michael Hunter and Justin Dragoman.
Meanwhile, big hitters Mason Gray, Jon Koltun, Cody Park and Albert Spycher led the way offensively.
"It was just a total team effort,” Tait said. "They never got too high or low. They just stayed steady.”
The club did understand the significance of what they were doing while they were on the court, Tait said.
"It has its own pressure,” he explained. "This is their last opportunity to accomplish this, and we've been working towards this for seven or eight years. It's pretty neat to achieve their goal.”
Tait said the current team has been training together in Whitehorse since the majority of them were in Grade 7.
"It's always been a long-term goal to be able to compete with the Maritime provinces at Canada Games,” he said. "The reality of us competing with B.C. and Ontario and Saskatchewan is tough, because they're all CIS players. As anybody
in any team sport in the territory will tell you, it's a tough thing to accomplish.”
In 2009, the men's volleyball team took one set off Newfoundland and Labrador, an accomplishment viewed as a stepping stone to yesterday's result.
The Yukon will square off with Newfoundland and Labrador this afternoon.
Tait said he believes that if his club plays like they did against P.E.I., they have a "legitimate shot” to take down a second east coast club in consecutive days.
Without a shot at a top-three finish, the Yukon will finish out their Games playing for pride.
"With any team sport, if N.W.T. doesn't show up, it's a big challenge for Yukon not to be eleventh.”
Alongside indoor volleyball, other local teams competing in the first week of Canada Games include mountain biking, female soccer, swimming and tennis.
The Games kicked off Friday at the University of Sherbrooke stadium with an appearance from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Sorry but it was BC that the boys played in the second game. They have not played New Brunswick yet.
