Canadian junior men's softball roster unveiled

Ontario and Saskatchewan will be well represented when Team Canada takes to the field at the Junior Men's World Softball Championship in Whitehorse this summer.

Ontario and Saskatchewan will be well represented when Team Canada takes to the field at the Junior Men's World Softball Championship in Whitehorse this summer.

Yesterday, Softball Canada announced the names of the 17 athletes selected to represent the country at the tournament scheduled to take place in the Yukon capital July 11 to 20.

Six players from Ontario and four from Saskatchewan make up the lion's share of the roster. Quebec and Alberta will each send three players, while Newfoundland and Labrador will also be represented.

The final roster was selected following a selection camp held last weekend in Brampton, Ont.

Players selected include: 

• Johnathan Baker (Kitchener, Ont.)

• Samuel Bedard-Desmarais (Nicolet, Que.)

• Justin Boyer (St. Louis, Sask.)

• Josh Elliot (Prince Albert, Sask.)

• Justin Ganie (Irma, Alta.)

• Eric Healey (Chapels Cove, Nfld.)

• Zachary MacKay (Irma, Alta.)

• Tyler Pauli (Mitchell, Ont.)

• Nick Penner (New Hamburg, Ont.)

• Curtis Piecowye (Saskatoon, Sask.)

• Matthew Pilon (Duck Lake, Sask.)

• Tyler Randerson (New Hamburg, Ont.)

• Francois-Charles Rene (St-Leonard-d'Aston, Que.)

• Taylor Schubada (Irma, Alta.)

• Marc-Andre Villeneuve (St-Leonard-d'Aston, Que.)

• Matt Wardrop (Owen Sound, Ont.)

• Tyson Zehr (Tavistock, Ont.)

Schubada is the only returnee from the 2012 junior men's team, which finished fourth in Parana, Argentina.

Jim Jones of Leduc, Alta., will serve as the team's head coach.

Canada will open its tournament against the Czech Republic July 11.

Argentina will be looking to defend its 2012 title – the first ever in South American history – while Japan and Australia will attempt to better their respective silver and bronze results.

In total, 12 teams will compete for world softball supremacy during the 10-day single round robin tournament.

The top four teams will advance to the page playoff round while the bottom six will compete in a consolation playoffs.
