Cadet Corporal Brendan Curteanu of Whitehorse carried the Yukon flag during the National Cadet Marksmanship Championship opening ceremony recently held at historic Fort George, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.

As flag-bearer, the member of 551 Whitehorse Lions Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron proudly led his teammates into the crowd of spectators and dignitaries to signify the official commencement of the last week's national championship.

"Carrying the flag was exciting, but a bit of a nerve-wracking experience,” said Curteanu. "I'm looking forward to taking on the other provinces, but mostly on improving my skills while I'm here.”

The Cadet Marksmanship Program is a recreational activity where cadets learn valuable skills and develop self-discipline, increased confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

It has a rich and long tradition of excellence going all the way back to 1910 when Canada sent a team of cadets to compete in Bisley, England.

Today's Canadian Cadet Movement Marksmanship Championship Series includes multiple levels of competition that allow youth to participate in progressively challenging activities, culminating in this national championship.

The Yukon team, a member of the overarching Northern Regions, finished last in composite team rankings. Jennifer Gast was the top-ranked Yukon shooter, finishing 57th.

Ryan Thompson and Curteanu also managed to crack the top-100.

This was not a Yukon team, it was a Territorial Composite team including 3 plus the coach from the Yukon and 2 from NWT.

The team was not last place composite, they were 11th out of 14.

Jenn Gast was the highest on that team, but not the highest from the Territories.

Congratulations to all 5 competitors from 551 (the other 2 were on a different team)
