The Arctic Edge Skating Club held their Arctic Winter Games trials and Gold Nugget competition Dec. 2-3 at the Canada Games Centre in Whitehorse.
The Arctic Edge Skating Club held their Arctic Winter Games trials and Gold Nugget competition Dec. 2-3 at the Canada Games Centre in Whitehorse.
The Star spoke with Arctic Edge coach Anne-Patrice Cross following the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) trials.
"It's kind of an all-club fun event. So we've got skaters from all different levels from our Rising Star Juniors all the way up to the ones that are trialing for the Arctics."
There were six skaters participating in the AWG trials. That includes Myla Turner, who was exempt from the trials on Saturday due to illness and will be evaluated for the final position on the team in the next few weeks.
Arctic Edge skaters were competing in Levels One and Two.
"There are two spots per level, there are four levels … but we don't have any skaters in the upper levels and so it's likely that they'll give three spots for the two lower levels, so we're hoping for six spots," explained Cross.
"It's always fun. I feel like everybody's always different in these types of situations. But it's always nice to see the skaters go out there and skate on their own. They all have their different strengths, so it's nice to see them perform and find ways to entertain the audience and pull off jumps and spins for the parents and the judges.
"It's just kind of a fun thing to watch as a coach."
Anika Kramer, 17, skated in the gold artistic event.
"It went pretty good," she said.
Kramer said she has been working on her current routine for about two months so "It's a little rough but it was pretty good.”
Kramer said it takes a while to perfect a routine.
"To get it ingrained in your body, to (where) you don't have to think about it, probably about six months, or maybe less, four to six months."
Kramer isn't participating in the Arctics this year.
"But I've done the one before, the one that did not get canceled. 2018.
"I just made it on the team but I think it was very exciting and new … it was a really good experience."
Regarding why she isn't in the AWG this year, Kramer said "I want to focus on school. Cause it's my last year."
Kramer, of course, is the younger sister of Mikayla Kramer, who is currently touring Europe with Disney On Ice. When asked what it's like to have a famous sister, Anika Kramer responded "It's pretty cool."
Despite Mikayla's success, Anika wants to follow her own path, instead choosing to concentrate on schooling.
Coach Cross added "There were a lot of good skates today … lots of personal bests today.
"Some of them maybe didn't skate as well as they wanted to, but it's always a good learning experience. Definitely a lot of positive moments today."
Here are the results of the AWG trials:
Level 1
1) Leah Lariviere
2) Kayla Huffman
3) Lily Bowen
Level 2
1) Madisyn Millar
2) Natilee Thompson
As noted above, Myla Turner will be skating in the AWG trials at a later date.
