Heavyweight contenders Air North Rangers and Pepsi have both been on a run of victories, but something had to give when they met Saturday morning in over 35’s soccer action.

Air North’s Modus Operandi of probing the opposition for weaknesses, trying to frustrate them into making a mistake was in evidence again as Air North ran up a two-goal lead.

John Main and River Walton got the Air North goals as they asserted control of the game, but even though Pepsi were playing with a light bench, they settled down to the task in hand.

Eric ‘The Big Easy’ Murphy has settled into his new role as a defensive enforcer and his play allowed captain Cirian Connolly to play with more freedom, as Pepsi pushed Air North further back into their own half.

Mark Sebek got a goal back to leave a very uncomfortable few minutes for Air North, but Air North are a tough nut to crack and have the knack of winning close games, as they were able to hold and win 2-1.

Gross’s brilliance not enough
to beat Chieftain

Klondike Office Systems gave league leaders Chieftain an almighty scare in an entertaining game at the CGC, before Chieftain ran out 5-3 winners.

Justin ‘Sandy’ Gross scored the quickest goal in league history as he lobbed James McCullough in the Chieftain net from the opening kickoff.

This shocked everyone playing or watching and it took a while for Chieftain to retaliate.

When they did KOS gave them another metaphoric bloody nose as they played their best game of the season by a long margin, retaking the lead every time Chieftain equalized.

Gross got his second and Mick Marceau added one more for KOS.

However, as the cream inevitably rises to the top of the glass, so did Chieftain, Jesse Walchuk leading the way with two goals.

With the trifecta of Wil Chetcutti, Miles Hume and Mark Chandler all getting a goal each.

The win leaves Chieftain battling it out with Air North at the top of the league, while KOS are still looking for their first win of the season.

Reanimated Mather stars in high octane tie

Peter Mather was back playing again after chipping his fingernail four weeks ago, and the rest seemed to inspire him to new heights.

He may wheeze like a set of old bagpipes that has been left out in the snow, but that doesn’t stop him from scoring spectacular goals and threading passes to his teammates as he jollies around the pitch as if he was skipping through his backyard.

Both teams had no interest in defending as they poured forward in search of personal glory, peppering the goals with shots from all angles.

Yukon Brewing put themselves in pole position with goals from Hector Lang, Kruno Kunovic, Mather and two from Will Chetcutti .

While Justin Carre got two, Adil Khalik and Matthius Hartmann scored for Yukoninfo.com.

The clock had stopped when Gareth Howells was determined to have fouled Carre in the penalty box.

So it was left to the big German Hartmann to smash the ball past a shell-shocked Sean Macdonald to seal a 5-5 tie.
